The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die completed The Last Kingdom's story, killing off several of the show's beloved characters. Seven Kings Must Die has thus far been a success for Netflix, topping its list of most streamed movies in the United States. While The Last Kingdom's story has now been completed, the series has become one of Netflix's most popular properties and could be in line for further spinoffs, depending on the long-term success of Seven Kings Must Die.

Unfortunately, if the franchise is renewed for further spinoffs, it will have to be without some of the series' most cherished characters. Seven Kings Must Die racked up quite the butcher's bill during its two-hour run time, which means the franchise's future would depend on either crafting a new set of characters or skipping backward in time to when some of them yet lived. However, all of that remains speculation, so it is likely more beneficial to run through a list of notable deaths from the film so that none of them are forgotten; the movie does move quickly, after all.

6 King Edward

The Last Kingdom, a king wearing a crown and staring up

Edward is a main character for most of The Last Kingdom, though he does not appear on-screen in Seven Kings Must Die. He is the eldest and only legitimate son of Alfred the Great, and he succeeded his father to the throne of Wessex. While Edward was never a fan favorite, he plays an important part in the series and lays the groundwork for his son, Aethelstan, to eventually conquer England. By the time of Edward's death, Wessex ruled three of England's four kingdoms.

Edward dies off-screen of old age early on in Seven Kings Must Die. His death is the catalyst for the entire film, as it launches the conflict for succession, ultimately leading to all the film's major conflicts. It also encouraged Anlaf to try his luck at invading England and defeating Aethelstan, which obviously did not end well for Anlaf.

5 Aldhelm

Aldhelm begins his time in The Last Kingdom as a fairly minor character. However, by the time Seven Kings Must Die rolls along, he has become a critical member of the King's court. Aldhelm was originally the advisor to the cruel and vindictive Lord of Merica, Aethelred, but his true loyalty shifted to Alfred's daughter, Aethelflaed, after she married Aethelred and became Lady of Mercia. He became a devoted servant and trusted advisor for Aethelflaed until her death. He also advised Edward and, at times, even Uhtred.

Aldhelm is hanged by Aethelstan during Seven Kings Must Die after he helps Uhtred escape Ingilmundr's assassination attempt. This is a jarring scene and a difficult one to watch for many fans who came to ire Aldhelm's solid reliability and deep level of loyalty. Aethelstan seems to regret this execution after he comes to his senses later in the film, but it is too little too late for Aldhelm.

4 Uhtred

Uhtred is The Last Kingdom's main protagonist and probably the biggest reason for the franchise's massive success on Netflix. Uhtred is a generational warrior and brilliant tactician with a genuine sense of honor. He is a reliable and loyal friend to those he loves and a formidable opponent for anyone brave enough to oppose him. Uhtred's presence on-screen and dynamism as a character provides the lifeblood of the series and creates a lens for the audience to observe the formation of England and the general quality of life in medieval England.

While Seven Kings Must Die. Uhtred's probable death marks the end of the main story and the conclusion of one of television's most engaging character arcs.

3 Ingrith

Ingrith first appears in The Last Kingdom season 5 and returns for the series conclusion in Seven Kings Must Die. She marries Finan off-screen between The Last Kingdom season 5 and the start of Seven Kings Must Die. Ingrith is given a central role in the film, revealing the prophecy from which the movie takes its name.

Ingrith is killed in Seven Kings Must Die when Anlaf's men return to an unguarded Bebbanburg, trapping the few living residents in a cave to starve. Her death is brutal, likely dying of dehydration in that dark lonely cave. Uhtred, Finan, and the rest of the gang find her and the rest of Bebbanburg's residents already dead, and the grief Finan feels for his wife is palpable, making this one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the franchise.

2 Domnal Prince Of Alba

An image of Domnal and Constantin standing over a table in The Last Kingdom

Domnal is the nephew of Constantine, King of Alba, though he is often treated as a son. He and Constantine are two of the main antagonists in The Last Kingdom, season 5. They play that role again in Seven Kings Must Die, though they seem most reluctant to Anlaf in opposing Aethelstan. It is not until Aethelstan begins raiding in the north that they decide to go to war to protect their kingdom from Saxon expansion.

Domnal is killed in the Battle of Brunanburh by Finan. As the heir to the Kingdom of Alba, he is considered one of the kings in the Seven Kings Must Die prophecy. His death is not a real focal point in the film, but it is essential considering his involvement in the movie's driving prophecy.

1 Rognvaldr

Rognvaldr grins in The Last Kingdom

Rognvaldr is the brother of Sigtryggr, who came to rule in Eoferwic after Sigtryggr's death by execution. He is a drunkard and largely untrustworthy. In The Last Kingdom season 5, he is revealed to be a spy for Brida's invading force.

Rognvaldr dies off-screen without appearing in The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, but his death is important because it is used as justification for Aethelstan to take Eoferwic. The early advances made by Aethelstan after his coronation turn the other kings of the British Isles against him, so the death of Rognvaldr is significant. His death is debatably more important than anything he did in life because it kicks off Aethelstan's expansion and leads to the bloody Battle of Brunanburh.
