The Last of Us season 2 is on its way after the action-packed first chapter of HBO's video game adaptation. Season 1 proved to be a hit as Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey provided mesmerizing performances as Joel and Ellie. The chemistry between the two is unique and believable, progressing with each episode as the main characters form a powerful bond in a post-apocalyptic world. Unlike many zombie shows and video-game adaptations, The Last of Us invests a lot of time in the drama of its characters, offering compelling studies that lead up to a memorable (and quite shocking) finale.
The season 1 finale sets up The Last of Us season 2 in many ways, starting with Joel's shocking dilemma where he chooses to prioritize Ellie's life over humanity after he discovers the Fireflies plan. While Joel kills many people trying to stop him in the hospital, it seems that his actions will have consequences, as one Firefly did manage to escape. Given that the Last of Us II takes place five years in the future, it'll be interesting to see how the writers and showrunners will adapt the source material again for The Last of Us season 2.

The New & Returning Stars Of Season 2
The Last of Us season 2 cast will feature the two returning stars. After they proved to be a hit, both Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are back following their respective Emmy nominations. With Joel and Ellie also returning to Jackson at the end of The Last of Us, Gabriel Luna has also hinted that he will be returning in season 2 to play Tommy. As he is married to Maria, it is likely that Rutina Wesley will return as well.
Other confirmed cast include Kaitlyn Dever who has been cast as Abby Anderson, a violent soldier out for revenge, and Young Mazino's Jesse, who is a kind and generous member of the community. Additionally, Isabela Merced is ing the season 2 cast as Dina. Emmy winner Catherine O'Hara will appear in season 2, though her role has not been revealed yet.
Recent Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright will be reprising his role as Isaac Dixon from The Last of Us II game, and has spoken a little about what may be coming in of Isaac's storyline. In an interview with TVLine talking about the new spy drama, The Agency, Jeffrey Wright also teased that The Last of Us season 2 might tell Issac's backstory.
"People have asked… whether we’ll get a little bit of a backstory about Isaac? We might. It might not be pretty." While this doesn't tell us too much - and in fact, refuses to directly confirm if his backstory will be part of the season - the comment that it wouldn't be pretty is telling, and suggests that this is going to be a bigger part of the new season.

The Last Of Us Season 2 Story Details
Season 1 Set Up Several Major Conflicts
The Last of Us season 2 story details reveal that some parts of season 2 will explore the events in-between Part I and Part II
The Last of Us season 2 story details reveal that some parts of season 2 will explore the events in-between Part I and Part II. While in the game, Joel's death occurs very early on, he may live quite a bit longer in The Last of Us season 2 to explore the new character dynamic. With them also promising to show new deadly Cordyceps variant stages, the show's lore will likely be explored more too. While Druckmann and Mazin may have made a few changes to the source material, likely, The Last of Us season 2 will eventually come back to set up the conflict between Abby, Ellie, and Joel.
More specifically, season 2 picks up five years after the ending of season 1, but it's clear that the fallout of Joel's decision hasn't been settled yet. Joel killed the Fireflies and kept it from Ellie, and this level of secret could be enough to sever their relationship forever. On top of that, Joel's actions have also brought the wrath of Abby who (in the games at least) is out for revenge after her father was one of the people killed by Joel.

Watch The Trailers Below
HBO released a teaser in August 2024 that hypes up their future slate for the end of 2024 and into 2025. The Last of Us season 2 occupies the longest chunk in the teaser and features footage of Joel being interviewed by Catherine O'Hara's new character. Furthermore, several big action sequences are shown, as well as small glimpses of Jeffrey Wright as Isaac and Isabel Merced as Dina.
In September 2024, HBO released a full teaser for The Last of Us season 2, and it reveals a lot about what's to come. Framed by an interview between Joel and Catherine O'Hara's mystery character, the trailer flashes back and forth between good times at the Wyoming settlement, and the terrible moment when the infected invade. Hanging over everything is Joel's choice at the end of season 1, something that could drive a wedge between himself and Ellie.
In January 2025, another teaser trailer for The Last of Us season 2 was revealed, and it mostly served to announce the April release window. The teaser opens with Abby walking down a hallway while holding a gun and looking frightened. An alarm blares before she begins narration about her code of ethics. The trailer then cuts to various high-intensity scenes from the season, including an infected raid on the human stronghold.
Max dropped a full-length trailer for The Last of Us season 2 in March 2025, and it previews a truly explosive sophomore return. After establishing that life in Jackson has returned to normal, the trailer then reveals that many sinister things are lurking just below the surface. Meanwhile, a full-scale zombie attack on the town's perimeter puts everyone in jeopardy, and Ellie learns the truth about Joel, which threatens to ruin their strong bond forever.
