A new trailer for The Last of Us season 2 will pick up after Joel (Pedro Pascal) saved Ellie (Bella Ramsey) from a fatal procedure that could've cured the cordyceps infection, and, crucially, lied to her about what happened.

Max has provided a new peek at The Last of Us season 2 with a quick trailer, which begins with the arrival of new villain Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). Abby's shown walking down an empty hospital hallway while an alarm blares, a moment that will be quite familiar to video game fans. The full trailer can be seen below:

What This Trailer Means For The Last Of Us Season 2

Abby Has Arrived, And Her Introduction Will Be Devastating

Without getting into too many Last of Us game spoilers, Abby is a controversial character, and her first appearance in the above trailer sets up her devastating, but pivotal role. It seems the new season will, at least briefly, pick up shortly after The Last of Us season 1's ending, when Joel took out an entire hospital of Fireflies to save Ellie. Abby is shown wearing a Firefly pendant around her neck, confirming her status as a member of the group. Joel's actions have taken someone from her, and season 2 will show this in great detail.

From there, the Last of Us season 2 trailer features images that have been glimpsed in previous teasers, such as Tommy (Gabriel Luna) rushing to defend his Wyoming settlement, Ellie getting closer to her new love interest, Dina (Isabela Merced), and Joel in distress. Over it all, though, Abby's presence looms large, with Dever providing voiceover for the footage. It is clear that Abby will be a large part of The Last of Us season 2, and HBO's marketing approach is so far giving her the significance she deserves.

Our Take On The Last Of Us Season 2 Trailer

The Last Of Us Is Going To Get Even Darker

Joel (Pedro Pascal) about to cry in The Last of Us Season 2

In the games, Abby makes a daring move while seeking revenge, and it in turn sets Ellie on her own dark path. Though HBO has been careful to keep specifics under wraps, likely for those who have not played the games, there have been several nods alluding to what's ahead. The Last of Us season 1 was already a dark run, with almost every episode containing the death of a beloved character. Despite that, season 2 is poised to get even darker, and the ominous trailer backs this tone. With the season arriving in April, expect more teases to arrive soon.
