Speaking with Variety, Catherine O'Hara, who plays Gail, discussed whether she'd be coming back to the show, confirming that The Last of Us season 3 will be "the Abby story" in the process. This aligns with the story in The Last of Us Part II, which switches perspectives halfway through the game to reveal more about Abby's perspective on the larger plot at play. I don’t know. Craig did say definitely not this next season. It’s the Abby story. Maybe. But I think it was to serve Joel and Ellie.
What Abby's Story Means For The Last Of Us Season 3
The TV Series Is Following The Source Material
O'Hara's confirmation that The Last of Us season 3 will be focusing on Abby isn't surprising, as this is the same structure The Last of Us Part II also follows. Once Ellie's story reaches a certain point in the game, the perspective switches over to the game's antagonist, showing her side of the story after having killed Joel. That point of perspectives getting switched is approaching, with the season 2 finale likely adapting through that part of the game's storyline. Whether that will be clarified in season 2, episode 7, though, remains to be seen.

Abby has been notably absent from The Last of Us season 2 since she killed Joel, making it unclear what she's doing as Ellie searches for her.
This decision was a polarizing one when the source material first came out, with The Last of Us Part II becoming controversial for giving Joel's killer her own story. It's also a big risk for the TV show, since, whenever the series comes back, showing events from Abby's perspective means sidelining Ellie for a whole season. Having a full season of the show without one of its main characters will be a unique storytelling move, though heightened by the promise that both seasons will tie together by the end.
