As TNT's new spinoff, The Next Chapter.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Devlin opened up about the connections between The Next Chapter and previous Librarians movies and shows. Having learned from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars universe, Devlin plans to create a far larger world. While "the original show is still going on" in a narrative sense, as "those adventures are still happening," Devlin and the rest of the cast and crew plan to tell fresh stories in this universe. Check out his full quote below:
Well, I think we've learned from things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or what they're doing with Star Wars, that sometimes you can tell a lot of different stories that all exist in the same place. John and I got really excited about thinking of what other stories could happen. In the movies, we met The Library, but in the original series, we discovered that there was an Annex up in Portland, Oregon, and we started thinking about, "Well, where else have there been Annexes? Where are there annexes now? What adventures happen at those annexes?" So, we started with an annex in Belgrade, Serbia in 1847 and we said, "Well, who was The Librarian then, and why was there an annex there?" That began a whole brand new story. So, for us, it's really fun to expand the universe of The Library, but also, in our mind, the original show is still going on. In other words, those adventures are still happening.
What This Means For The Librarians' Universe
There Could Someday Be A Crossover
Because it is taking place in a completely different place in The Librarian's timeline, The Next Chapter should largely be standalone. The original show directly tied into Flynn Carsen's story, as it features a cast that was directly connected to Flynn, even to the point of being recruited at the same time. Those relationships will not exist in this show, as The Next Chapter's trailer revealed that most of the cast will be fairly new to the idea of magical items. It will present a sharp change after four seasons of stars with relative familiarity with the artifacts.
The spinoff was originally slated for a 2024 release on The CW, but it was rescheduled for a May 25, 2025 release on TNT.
There will be some crossovers to the original The Librarian franchise, as the trailer also previewed Christian Kane in a returning role as Jacob Stone. Stone appeared in the original 2014 show, so there will be connections to previous iterations of this universe. That should come as no surprise, given that the MCU and the Star Wars movies and shows all regularly feature crossovers, callbacks, and cameos. Devlin truly wants to enhance this TV universe, and Stone's appearance is proof that he is ready to rely on proven strategies.
Our Take On The Librarians' Universe
It Is Perfect For Its Era
Three movies and a four-season-long spinoff are already grounds for a wider universe, but adding another show on top of those concepts means that the approach needs to change. Constantly featuring Noah Wyle would allow for fun callbacks, but it also means that the franchise is never able to grow apart from him. While Wyle is serving as an executive producer, allowing the universe to feature other stars gives it the opportunity to adapt and change. The Librarians: The Next Chapter is hoping to prevent stagnation by developing its universe further, which is the perfect move.
