I Rewatched The MCU's Biggest Box Office Bomb And I Still Don't Understand Why It Didn’t Succeed
The MCU has had some issues during the Multiverse Saga, but after rewatching Marvel Studios' biggest box office bomb, I don't understand its failure.
The Marvels Didn't Deserve To Be The MCU's Biggest Box Office Bomb
Outside Factors Contributed To The MCU Movie's Lackluster Earnings
The Marvels undoubtedly failed financially, grossing only $206 million against its $274 million budget. However, there were a handful of outside factors that tainted the film’s release and affected its box office numbers. The Marvels released during the tail end of the SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes, meaning that a proper press tour was virtually impossible during the peak of the strikes. The film suffered from a severe lack of promotion and appearances by the actors themselves, especially for a film that wasn’t incredibly highly anticipated in the first place.
The Marvels was doomed from the beginning, since it was a project that depended on fans having seen previous Disney+ projects to know two of the main characters. However, despite its failed box office numbers, The Marvels is far from the worst MCU movie in of content. In fact, it wasn’t even the worst release of the year considering that both Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion were part of the MCU’s 2023 slate. While the film does have its flaws, there is a lot more substance to The Marvels than most audiences give it credit for.

12 Biggest Factors In The Marvels’ Historic Box Office Disaster
The Marvels has made history by breaking the record for the lowest-grossing opening weekend for an MCU movie, and there are several reasons why.
Why The Marvels Is Perfect To Watch Or Rewatch After Deadpool & Wolverine
After enjoying Deadpool & Wolverine, fans may be surprised to find that The Marvels actually has plenty of similar elements to the MCU’s latest blockbuster. A fun yet emotionally charged team-up is the core of both films, with the chemistry between Carol, Monica, and Kamala being one of the highlights of The Marvels. Comedy is expected of any Deadpool film, but The Marvels had a lot of surprising humor that actually worked. The Marvels even has an underrated musical number on Aladna, reminiscent of Deadpool & Wolverine’s now-viral opening NSYNC dance sequence.
If anything, fans of Deadpool & Wolverine should give The Marvels a chance if they want a teaser into the X-Men’s MCU future. The Marvels' post-credits scene features a notable cameo by Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy aka Beast, setting up Monica’s future involvement with the X-Men. X-Men fans were thrilled to have Deadpool and Wolverine officially the MCU, but they’ll actually have to look to The Marvels to get a tease of what the mutants’ immediate Marvel future looks like.
