WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for The Marvels.Marvel Studios' Marvel movies. One's identity is immediately clear, while the other may not be recognizable right away, especially for audience unfamiliar with the Marvel comics.

More broadly, The Marvels' credits scene deals with the larger themes of the Multiverse Saga. As confirmed by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, the MCU Phases 4, 5, and 6 comprise the Multiverse Saga, which so far has seen a couple of heroes and villains traverse the Marvel multiverse. Although The Marvels does not deal at all with the Multiverse Saga's main villain, Kang and all his variants, it does feature one of the main three heroes trapped in a parallel reality after saving the universe. Now, we break down what The Marvels' post-credits scene means.

Captain Marvel has become an integral MCU character ahead of The Marvels' release. Here is how to watch every one of her films in order.

Mid-Credits Scene: X-Men's Beast And Binary The MCU

After closing the rift in reality created by Dar-Benn and the quantum bands, Monica Rambeau is trapped in a parallel reality. There, she wakes up in a mysterious white room, finding what appears to be her mother, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), sitting in the chair beside her bed.

This positioning of the characters is a reversal of the moment when Monica was blipped away by Thanos' snap, where she was sitting beside Maria's hospital bed while her mother was sick with cancer.

However, it's not a version of Maria that knows Monica, and she is instead referred to as Binary. As the scene unfolds, the X-Men's Beast, played by returning Fox franchise actor Kelsey Grammer, is also revealed. Other references to the X-Men—including the X-Men door and Beast name-dropping Charles Xavier—also appear in the scene. The scene ends with a full view of Binary and her costume, which is pulled straight from the comics.

Who Is Binary? Lashana Lynch's New MCU Character Explained

Maria Rambeau, aka Binary, speaks to Monica at the end of The Marvels

When introduced in the Marvel comics, Binary was essentially a super-charged version of Captain Marvel. While Carol was living with the X-Men, she was captured and experimented on by aliens called the Brood. Their experiments granted Carol access to far more cosmic power through a connection with a white hole, and with her new power she took on the mantle of Binary. In more recent comics, Binary became a duplicate of Captain Marvel that Carol created after focusing her energy into forming the being.

In of how the MCU is adapting the character, it seems likely they'll adapt a version of the earlier origin, especially since they've shown Binary with the X-Men. However, as was the case with Earth-838's Captain Marvel in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it's likely this version of Binary is a variant of Maria Rambeau rather than Carol Danvers. If that's the case, it'll be a departure from the comics, but paves the way for Lynch's return to the MCU as a member of the alternate reality's X-Men.

Kelsey Grammar Returns As X-Men's Beast In MCU Multiverse

Kelsey Grammer as Beast snarling in the midst of battle in X-Men: The Last Stand

The perhaps more recognizable of the two characters introduced in The Marvels' credits scene is Beast, with Grammer returning for the role. Grammer ed the original Fox X-Men franchise as Dr. Hank McCoy aka Beast in X-Men: The Last Stand, and appeared briefly in X-Men: Days of Future Past. In the X-Men franchise, Hank McCoy was first a student at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters before becoming a teacher.

Hank is a mutant and a member of the X-Men and, in The Last Stand, the Secretary of Mutant Affairs. It is unclear what similarities, if any, the version of Beast from The Marvels has with the character established in the X-Men franchise because it's not yet been confirmed what universe Monica wound up in. Despite this unclarity, actor Kelsey Grammer has since broken his silence on the role in an interview with The Wrap:

"It is my hope that you will [see him again]. I can say with a certain amount of confidence that you will. I would love to. [I was] very pleased [by the response of the recent cameo]. A lot of people got in touch [with him] I’ve always wanted to play him again. I see him as an extraordinary character, a real character of gravitas and importance in our culture. I’m delighted Beast is back and hope he’s back in a real way."

Is That Fox's X-Men Universe In The Marvels Credits Scene?

There are undoubtedly clues that Monica may have ended up in the Fox X-Men universe at the end of The Marvels. Grammer's return could point to it being Fox's continuity since he has played Beast previously. Furthermore, The Marvels uses theme music from X2: X-Men United and Days of Future Past during the scene.

This seems to indicate a connection between those movies despite Grammer not appearing in X2. Lastly, there's the X-Men door, which looks very similar in design to the Fox movies. Given all these indicators, it is highly possible Monica traveled to the Fox X-Men universe, but until Marvel Studios confirms, it is not known for certain.

End-Credits: Flerken Audio Puts A Spin On Endgame's Credits

Flerken kittens float in zero gravity in The Marvels

While there isn't a whole scene at the end of The Marvels' credits, there is an audio tag in the form of the sounds of flerkens. While it's not often Marvel includes audio credits stingers, there was one included in Avengers: Endgame. At the very end of the Endgame credits, sounds of Iron Man's armor can be heard, paying one last homage to the hero that kicked off the MCU. In the case of The Marvels, the flerken audio is a final joke, calling back to one of the more silly sequences in the movie, where the heroes use the flerkens to evacuate the SABER space station.

Marvel Credits Shocker: No MCU Character Teased To Return

Since the early days of the MCU, some movies would end with a text screen that read, "[Character] Will Return." In MCU Phase 4 and 5, this became more of a norm, with every movie except Black Widow having some kind of text screen confirming the return of a character in the film. However, The Marvels bucks that trend, not including any confirmation of whether the characters will return. That's not to say the characters won't return, of course. It may just be a case of Marvel not wanting to choose only one of the heroes to spotlight since The Marvels is ultimately a team-up movie with three leads.

When Will Captain Marvel Return?

Since Carol Danvers is a member of the Avengers, it's likely Captain Marvel will next appear in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. She's one of the most powerful remaining Avengers, so it would make sense for her to re the team in their battle against Kang. As of now, it's unclear what the status of the Avengers is in the MCU since the team hasn't been seen following the events of Endgame. But since Captain Marvel is one of the MCU's strongest heroes, she's likely to appear.

When Will Ms Marvel Return?

As with the other heroes, there is no confirmation yet on when Kamala Khan will return, but considering the ending of the movie sets up a spinoff featuring young superheroes, Ms. Marvel will likely return in a Young Avengers movie or TV show. Whether that arrives before or after The Kang Dynasty remains to be seen. One possibility is that the team may be formed off-screen or during Avengers 5 before then ing the main Avengers to fight Kang.

Of course, the more likely possibility is that the Young Avengers will receive their own story in some form. There is a possibility of Ms. Marvel season 2 happening and showing the Young Avengers coming together, but that seems unlikely since Marvel would want to highlight the team's name. No matter what, it seems Ms. Marvel's MCU future is tied to the Young Avengers.

When Will Monica Rambeau And The X-Men Return?

Since Monica and the X-Men are in a parallel reality, it is similarly unclear when they might return and connect back to the story of the MCU. Since this is the Multiverse Saga, they will likely the fight in either Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or, at the latest, Avengers: Secret Wars. However, they could potentially appear even sooner.

Based on Deadpool 3 set photos, the 2024 MCU movie is speculated to tell an X-Men story that spans the multiverse. If that is the case, Deadpool may come face to face with Beast, Binary, and Monica at some point during his solo adventure, especially if the X-Men characters are all from the same universe. That said, it remains to be seen until confirmation comes from Marvel when any of the characters from The Marvels will return in the MCU.
