The Masked Singer returned for its third season in early February and introduced a whole new format. The 18 contestants were divided into three groups of six. For three consecutive weeks each, the groups performed for the judges until only the top three from Groups A, B and C remained, forming the 'Super Nine'.
While there were many contestants at the beginning, two were clear standouts. Turtle took things slow and steady in Group A and is the speculated, but for now, read on for five reasons why Turtle should win season three and five why Frog should take the Golden Mask trophy.
Turtle Is A Talented Singer
Surrounded by competition, where many of the departed contestants are not professional singers, it is clear that Turtle does this for living. His renditions thus far include songs such as "There's Nothin' Holding Me Back" by Shawn Mendes and "Higher Love" by Steve Winwood, which rank among the best performances of the season. Some of the judges' guesses include Zac Efron and Joey McIntyre.
Since the show's name is The Masked Singer, it would be only fitting if someone who is a skilled singer would win the show. That is, after all, one of the main components of the series. Whether Turtle's voice will be enough remains to be seen.
Frog Is A Versatile Performer
Since debuting in Group B's first episode, Frog has shown that he is a man (amphibian) of many talents. Similarly to other contestants in past seasons, he puts on a whole performance, rather than just singing the song. This includes both rapping and dancing, prompting judges' guesses such as Alfonso Ribeiro, Kevin Hart and Omarion.
As the fate of the masked celebrities rests with votes made by the judges and the live studio audience, entertaining them is very important. After all, falling flat vocally would normally be the end for someone competing on a singing show. If the singer has created a memorable stage presence, it could save them, depending on how far along the competition is.
Turtle Wants To Make A Comeback
In his first clue package, Turtle alludes to being in his industry for a while. The metaphor of a race is used to illustrate how some of his similarly aged-peers have crashed and burned. Meanwhile, Turtle himself is still around, but at a slower and steadier pace.
Redemption stories are nothing new on The Masked Singer. Season 1 winner Monster (T-Pain) wanted to show his true, autotune free vocals to the world. Season 2's champ Fox (Wayne Brady) wanted to have more recognition for his singing abilities.
Frog Has A "Love Story"
As the performers usually perform separately, there are not many opportunities to develop a narrative between more than one of them at once. However, in recent weeks, two Group B alums have been showing affection to one another. Kitty gave Frog a peck on the cheek, while Frog gifted a heart-shaped cushion that said, 'Team Frog' to Kitty.
This "relationship" of sorts could have an endearing effect on the studio audience and help influence their votes. After all, no one would want to break up a budding romance. Even if it is between a human-sized Frog and Kitty ...
Turtle Is A Heartthrob
While his identity is still concealed, Turtle has hinted on multiple occasions that he is/was considered a heartthrob when not wearing the mask. Assuming that he is being serious, this would fall in line with judges and viewer guesses such as Zac Efron, Jesse McCartney and Nick Lachey.
Achieving this status implies a high level of popularity. With this in mind, a Turtle victory would make the followers of whoever is under the mask very happy. A high-profile winner could be an outcome that would satisfy all viewers, whether they are fans of that particular individual or not.
Frog Is Sharply Dressed
Frog's costume is one of the most unique and impressive-looking in season three. He was one of the first masks to be d. This distinctiveness helped Frog stand out in the minds of fans, weeks before his actual performance debut.
Many of the successful contestants in previous seasons were similarly decked out in elaborate costumes, in particular, Fox, Leopard and Thingamajig from Season 2, all of whom reached the top five. Another example is Peacock from the first season.
Turtle Paid Tribute To A Previous Contestant
As a member of Group A, Turtle was one of the first contestants to perform this season. His opponents included the likes of Miss Monster, Llama, White Tiger, Robot and Kangaroo. For his first song, Turtle's choice linked back to one of season 2's most memorable performers.
That song was "Kiss From a Rose" by Seal. The Grammy Award-winning British singer-songwriter was the man behind the Leopard during season 2. He went on to reach the semi-finals, finishing in fourth place overall.
Frog Has An Attitude With Ken
Of all the judges on The Masked Singer, there is perhaps none more engaging than Ken Jeong. The actor/comedian is now synonymous with making incorrect guesses on the show. Sometimes they are near the mark, while on other occasions, they are wild and completely off. Many of the previous contestants subjected to Ken misidentifying them have not directly addressed the absurdity.
Frog, on the other hand, is a whole different story. In the Super 9 episode, his clue package addressed Ken's guesses by having Frog say "Ken, you can finally stop being wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong." This shows that the Frog has sass, which only helps distinguish him from the others.
Turtle Showed Good Sportsmanship To Astronaut
In the first episode following the Super 9, Turtle was pitted against fellow heartthrob Astronaut in a face-off. The two had been compared vocally to one another in previous weeks. They finally got to determine who would reign superior.
In the end, Turtle would come out victorious in the face-off. Rather than indulge in his victory, he paid respect to Astronaut by fist-bumping the gold spaceman before leaving the stage. From this, the level of respect that Turtle has for his competitors is clear.
Frog's Skillset Combines The Previous Winners
Should Frog be crowned the victor of Season 3, it would be an occasion reminiscent of his predecessors. As already mentioned, Frog is a multi-talented performer. This happens to be among the traits that he shares with the two winners of The Masked Singer to date.
Both Monster and Fox had additional abilities on top of singing. Monster, in his real-life as T-Pain, is also a rapper. Fox, or Wayne Brady, proved to be a talented dancer. Frog, to his credit, is able to do both while looking impressive doing it.
