After Amazon Prime Video struck gold with the animated adaptation of Critical Role's first DnD campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein is in the works, which will adapt the second. Critical Role is a web series which follows professional actors as they play Dungeons & Dragons across dozens of episodes, crafting fascinating campaigns and beloved fantasy characters. The Mighty Nein is the second such campaign featured on Critical Role, and the animated adaptation will follow a band of adventurers who must prevent an arcane artifact from falling into the wrong hands.
Set within the same universe as The Legend of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein will feature the same actors playing different characters in an adventure set many years later. The announcement of The Mighty Nein comes parallel with the success of Prime Video's Vox Machina, which is already renewed for a fourth season. It also hints at a possible expansion of the franchise, as each of Critical Role's campaign storylines are ripe for adaptation into an animated series. Though many details are under wraps for The Mighty Nein, it's already shaping up to be a fitting continuation of Vox Machina.

The Mighty Nein Latest News
Work Is Half-Way Done On The Animated Series
With little news surfacing since the new animated series was announced, the latest update confirms that The Mighty Nein is half done. As reported by PC Gamer, Critical Role cast member and CEO Travis Willingham spoke candidly about the progress of the series, saying "it's definitely more than halfway done, and I think everybody's going to be really thrilled with the way it's turning out." Willingham mentioned that the writing is completed and that it's been sent off to the animator who will then design the visuals for the show.
Read Willingham's full comments here:
"We have written all of Season 1. The storyboards are all being locked, if they haven't been already. So it's off to our overseas studio. We're getting animation tests back and seeing things come back in colour. We've designed all the characters. The magical spells and effects are being considered. We're talking about music, and how it's going to be different from Vox.

The Mighty Nein Is Confirmed
Prime Video Green-Lit The Show In 2023
Coming off the success of Critical Role's animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina, Prime Video hastily green-lit The Mighty Nein in early 2023 (via Variety). At the time, it was confirmed that the voice cast would return to reprise their roles from the original Dungeons & Dragons campaign, but little else was revealed outside what was apparent from the original Mighty Nein story. To announce the new show, Prime Video released a brief clip which featured choice lines from the campaign underscoring a dramatic shot of the gaming table used in Critical Role.
Since then, few details have emerged about the animated series, but it was announced in October 2024 that the writing and storyboards were completed, and that things had been shipped off to the animators. There's no telling how long the animation process will take, and no release window has been provided. A rough animated sequence was released in July 2024 which shows the first meeting between Fjord and Jester.
The Mighty Nein Cast Details
The Familiar Voices Of Critical Role Return
Much like the cast of The Legend of Vox Machina, the Mighty Nein series will be voiced by the original actors from the Critical Role campaign. This means keen-eared viewers will recognize the vocal talents of Travis Willingham as the half-orc warlock, Fjord Stone, alongside Laura Bailey as the tiefling cleric, Jester Lavorre. Liam O'Brien will appear as Caleb Widogast, a human wizard, while Sam Riegel plays the goblin rogue, Nott the Brave. Ashley Johnson plays barbarian Yasha Nydoorin, and Marisha Ray will be Beauregard "Beau" Lionett, a human monk.
Taliesin Jaffe will likely pull double duty as both Mollymauk "Molly" Tealeaf, and Caduceus Clay, while a new role will likely be dreamed up for Critical Role Dungeon Master, Matthew Mercer. It's unclear who will appear in ing roles throughout the series, but the Prime Video original will likely call on familiar voice talents from Vox Machina as well.

The Mighty Nein Story Details
An Epic Campaign Is In Store
The Mighty Nein is already shaping up to be a multi-season adventure, and could top even The Legend of Vox Machina with its complexity and high-fantasy excitement.
Though The Mighty Nein is a quintessential Dungeons & Dragons campaign, it sets itself apart from The Legend of Vox Machina because of its deftly-conceived political storylines and richer characters. The basic premise of the campaign is that a band of adventurers are tasked with crossing the continent of Wildemount while attempting to stop an all-out war between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty. This opens the door for exciting action, but it also introduces subplots concerning political corruption.
On top of all that, the adventurers must stop the god of eternal darkness, Tharizdûn, from escaping his prison and delving humanity into an apocalypse. With all of that, and more, in the offing, The Mighty Nein is already shaping up to be a multi-season adventure, and could top even The Legend of Vox Machina with its complexity and high-fantasy excitement.
