A Minecraft Movie finally arrived in early 2025, and the long-awaited video game movie managed to deliver. Minecraft is a sandbox game launched in 2011 that is known for firing the imagination of its player base and has gone on to become the best-selling game of all time. To say Minecraft has a massive audience is an understatement, and it was a given that — if Warner Bros. placed their blocks right — A Minecraft Movie could be one of the highest box-office earners of the decade.
The Minecraft movie first went into production in 2014, and a decade later, a lot has changed — with the movie, the wider entertainment landscape, and with the game itself. While there was no real story that A Minecraft Movie could pull from the game, Minecraft does have its lore that fans latch onto, and those were the things that were most important for the movie to get right. A Minecraft Movie was never meant to be peak cinema, but its successes prove that there is clearly an audience for more video game movies.

A Minecraft Movie Trailers
Catch The First Looks At The Gaming Movie Below
After years of development and mystery surrounding the video game adaptation, a trailer for A Minecraft Movie debuted in September 2024. The revealing teaser shows the four main characters as they enter Overworld and get their first looks at the weird and wonderful world of the game. They eventually meet Jack Black's character, who reveals himself to be Steve to little fanfare from the other heroes. Though the trailer shows off a lot of the game's familiar visuals, it doesn't reveal much about the plot.
A second trailer for A Minecraft Movie arrived in November 2024, and it reveals the origins of Jack Black's Steve. As a child, Steve longed to explore the mines, but it wasn't until adulthood that he eventually dug his way to the Overworld. Now, as other gamers find themselves in the new world, Steve shows them the ropes while explaining that some evil force is intent on destroying the Overworld. Nighttime comes fast, and the heroes are attacked by skeletons and zombies.
In February 2025, a short teaser for A Minecraft Movie premiered online, and it highlights Jason Momoa's Garrett. The former video game legend learns more about how the Overworld works while attempting to forge new items, messing around with ender pearls, and even having a blast with a creeper. Though the overall plot isn't the central focus of the teaser, it does an excellent job of explaining more of the lore of the Minecraft franchise.
With only a few weeks to go until the movie's debut, another full-length trailer for A Minecraft Movie arrived in late February 2025. Showing off more of the clever game mechanics that will make their way into the movie, the trailer then explains the origins of The Nether, and the creatures who live there. As Steve explains, the pigs from The Nether want to destroy all the Overworld because of its abundant joy and creativity.
