From the moment fans of The Office met Roy, they knew that he wasn’t going to be a great character. The more they saw of his relationship with Pam it was clear that Roy was a jerk and that these two weren’t right for one another.
While fans always wanted Pam to leave Roy and be with Jim instead, it’s easy to forget all of the bad things Roy did to Pam. He was even worse than some people might , and luckily, Pam finally found the courage to leave him.
Didn’t get her anything for Valentine’s Day
Similar to his approach with Christmas gifts, Roy was not great at Valentine’s Day giving either. He generally just didn't put much thought into anything like this.
He didn’t send Pam flowers or anything else on the day even though she clearly was hoping for something. Then, when she mentioned it to him, he just made a joke about getting her into the tub. It was clear he only cared about Pam when he could use her for something he wanted.
How he treated her on their first date
When viewers heard the story of Roy and Pam’s first date, it was clear just how bad their relationship was. Even from the beginning, Roy was a rather aloof jerk who didn’t really care about how Pam felt.
He took her on their first date to a hockey game with his brothers. If this wasn’t bad enough, they then forgot about her and left her at the game. She should have never gone out with him again after that.
When he went off the rails after Pam left him
This item is only so low on the list because he technically didn’t do this to Pam, but it does show the kind of person he was and how he didn’t have emotional intelligence.
It shows that he had taken Pam for granted and relied on her while not treating her very well. While going through a break-up can be really difficult, Roy nearly destroyed his own life and did some dangerous things like drunk driving.
He was cheap and uncaring about buying her gifts
One way that the series showed Jim was a better match for Pam was through gifts, particularly Christmas gifts. While Jim spent all this time getting Pam a gift that she wanted with the teapot and including inside jokes and moments from their relationship, Roy was just happy to not have to get her an iPod after she won it during the White Elephant game.
Then, fans learn that he actually got her a knock-off brand iPod instead of the real thing.
Would never come to events with her
There are many times in the first two seasons of the show where Pam wants Roy to come to work events with her and enjoy them, and Roy just ain't having it. Even when he does show up like at Casino Night, he’s always looking to get away as soon as possible even when Pam is having a good time.
The worst example of him just not caring about what Pam wanted to do was when he left her at Chili’s.
Wouldn’t commit to marrying her for years
Pam and Roy are technically already engaged when the series begins, but this doesn’t mean they have a date planned. Pam is upset by her long engagement that has no end in sight. In fact, she’s been engaged for so long that Michael even gave her the Dundee for longest engagement multiple years in a row.
While Roy finally commits to setting a date, it’s just another way he doesn’t listen to what Pam wants.
Attacked Jim in the office
While Roy might not do this to Pam directly, it does impact her. It put her in a weird position as she had to apologize to Jim, and she felt bad for what Roy did.
Also, it was really not okay for him to do that to Jim. The fact that he got so angry as to attack him, especially at the place where they both worked, shows that he isn’t a great guy. While Pam shouldn’t have gotten back together with him, he definitely showed he hadn’t changed that much.
Cared more about hanging with the guys than her
One of the biggest problems with Pam and Roy’s relationship is that Roy didn’t really make Pam a priority. He did seem to like that she was there for him and to take care of some of his needs, but he would cast her aside when he didn’t feel like hanging out with her.
He was often more interested in going out for a drink with his friends and co-workers than in doing what Pam wanted to do. While, of course, it’s good to have friends, he was just too dismissive.
Not ing her art school dreams
Roy really seemed to wear Pam down over the years of her relationship. She didn’t seem to have much confidence or a lot of belief in herself. While not all of this can be blamed on Roy, he certainly made it much worse.
He never ed her dreams, and he shot down her idea of going to art school. He made her feel like it was ridiculous, and a good relationship involves both people ing and encouraging the other.
