contestants are chosen from the studio audience, meaning anyone who's lucky enough to get into the audience has the same chance at winning big.

The Price is Right, hosted by Drew Carey, is generally considered to be less a game of strategy and more a game of luck, mixed in with some good guesses, of course. Still, there are opportunities to display savvy strategy, such as the show's famed Plinko board game. Plinko is one of the show's most popular challenges, and contestants can earn Plinko chips by correctly guessing the price of everyday items that don't exceed $100. The more Plinko chips the player earns, the better their chances of winning big.

What Is Plinko?

Plinko Is One Of The Price Is Right's Games

Plinko is one of The Price is Right's most popular games. Even casual viewers of The Price is Right have heard of Plinko, a game that requires players to drop a chip down through the board's series of pegs to land in a money slot. According to priceisright.fandom.com, the game originated in 1983 and was invented by Frank Wayne, the show's late executive producer.

Prizes vary, but the general Plinko game will offer fans a chance at winning up to $50k. Producers will sometimes up the prize amount, depending on the show. The way to play is simple: Contestants can win up to five Plinko chips, small discs with the show's logo emblazoned on them. They win chips by guessing the price of various items.

The more chips, the higher the chance at winning.

Players will then climb a set of stairs to the top of the Plinko board, and drop each chip down the slots. The chip will bounce through pegs, eventually landing at the bottom in one of the numbered money slots. For most, this looks like a game of pure chance, as the bouncing follows no rhyme or reason. However, savvy players will try different strategies in order to maximize winnings at Plinko.

The Reason Most Fail At Plinko

Positioning Is Key

An engineer took to Reddit last month to share that although Plinko looks like a game of chance, there are strategies to employ that make the odds of winning higher. The man identified himself as Robert B. Hayes, PhD, CHP, PE, an Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University, a Fellow of the Health Physics Society, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In his Reddit post, Robert shared a one-and-a-half-minute video breaking down the science of Plinko.

Drew Carey reflects on his decision to pay for striking writers' meals during the Writers Guild of America strike and how he almost lost his house.

Robert used something called a "normal distribution generator," a sort of miniature version of the Plinko board, to explain that pins, or chips, in the case of the game show, will fall to the left or to the right of the pegs. Robert used something called the "central limit theorem" to prove his point.

"The central limit theorem tells us that this normal distribution that we have here is what you actually expect when you're taking an average of a sample from a population and you're looking at the distribution of those sample averages."

In Robert's example, the balls were dropped from the center. The highest number of balls landed in the center of the board. Thus, Robert concluded that in Plinko, there is a strategy in of where the player drops the coins onto the board, which runs counter to what many feel is a game of chance.

What Is The Best Position To Be In To Win Big At Plinko?

The Best Position Is Down The Center

According to Robert's experiment, dropping the chips from the center of the board will result in a higher chance of the chips landing in the center slot, which is the highest cash value. Commenters on Robert's post agreed, with one who goes by Fennemore_Branch writing, "Your best bet is to always drop the chip right in the middle of the board. I always get a good chuckle out of contestants who spend time asking the audience where to drop them."

Another Reddit , cockkazn, questioned whether the placement of the pegs would make a difference. They asked, "Right, but doesn't the outcome rely heavily on the layout of the pegs? Every Plinko board I've seen has no distinct shape like the one shown here."

Another The Price is Right viewer, therealpoltic, answered by saying, "All plinko boards use this same layout. It’s essentially triangles. The main difference here, is that the balls are all launched from the middle. If everyone dropped their chip exactly in the middle each time, it’s more likely to go down the middle. Most forget that the two ZEROS are there right next to the big money. The zeros are there to match the likely normal distribution. For as often as we will see big money, we’ll also see zeros."

The Price is Right airs on CBS and streams on Paramount+.
