An engineer took to Reddit last month to share that although Plinko looks like a game of chance, there are strategies to employ that make the odds of winning higher. The man identified himself as Robert B. Hayes, PhD, CHP, PE, an Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University, a Fellow of the Health Physics Society, and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. In his Reddit post, Robert shared a one-and-a-half-minute video breaking down the science of Plinko.

Robert used something called a "normal distribution generator," a sort of miniature version of the Plinko board, to explain that pins, or chips, in the case of the game show, will fall to the left or to the right of the pegs. Robert used something called the "central limit theorem" to prove his point.

"The central limit theorem tells us that this normal distribution that we have here is what you actually expect when you're taking an average of a sample from a population and you're looking at the distribution of those sample averages."

In Robert's example, the balls were dropped from the center. The highest number of balls landed in the center of the board. Thus, Robert concluded that in Plinko, there is a strategy in of where the player drops the coins onto the board, which runs counter to what many feel is a game of chance.
