Warning: This Article Contains Descriptions Of Graphic Violence
After debuting on June 10, 2022, Supermassive Games' new interactive survival horror game The Quarry has quickly earned rave reviews for its level of immersion and player engagement. With over 180 different narrative outcomes, the fate of the various nine camp counselors at Hackett's Quarry summer camp must make the right series of decisions in order to stay alive. Otherwise, a vicious onslaught of monstrous werewolf attacks will take a player's life in short order.
While each character can potentially die in several different ways in the game, the most brutal fatalities consist of intense violence, graphic carnage, gory eviscerations, grisly dismemberment, jaw-dropping decapitations, and more.
Jedediah's Strangulation
Once players peruse The Quarry, they will soon realize that the Hackett family are the main villains. As such, fans of the summer camp horror movie-inspired game have come to expect the bad guys to get their grisly comeuppance during the various playthroughs, although Jedediah Hackett's deserving death is somewhat underwhelming at the hands of Laura.
When Laura stumbles upon Jedediah in his home, he pulls a gun and shoots her to the ground. Lunging on top of her with a knife, Laura manages to knee Jedediah off of her, grab him by the throat, and press him against a wall where she slowly chokes the life out of him with one hand. Just as Jedediah gasps for air, Laura snaps his neck like a twig and falls to the floor like a log. Swift, bloodless, and filmed from a safe enough distance away to take away from the visceral nature of the death, fans likely expect to see Jedediah and his fellow Hacketts treated more violently.
Emma's Treehouse Throat Gouge
Framed up-close and filmed with a shaky camera to accentuate the kinetic, visceral nature of the attack, Emma's savage werewolf throat-gouge increases the terror quotient quite a bit. Entering a treehouse, Emma has the option to through or open a trapdoor. If choosing the latter, Emma will be viciously accosted by a rabid werewolf with nowhere to run or hide from the slavering beast.
Aside from the inescapable claustrophobia of the setting and the horrifically grotesque monster itself, the growling sound effects mixed with Emma's helpless yelps go a long way in vivifying the fatality. What really makes the death so shocking is the way the werewolf rapidly gouges Emma's throat with its sharp fangs as she tries to fight it off, leaving a massive pool of blood on the treehouse floor.
Max Slaughtered By A Werewolf
The fact that Max can only die one way in the highly-anticipated horror game makes his grisly demise particularly memorable and quite shocking. A masterfully atmospheric fatality that builds tension and suspense as it erupts with swift carnage, Max has the option of staying on the island or swimming to shore. If the latter option is chosen, Max's idyllic nighttime swim is soon rudely interrupted by a blood-parched werewolf.
After a slow build-up that lulls players into a false sense of security, Max climbs onto the docks and is suddenly attacked by a shadowy werewolf who appears in close-up with an open maw. The beast quickly pushes Max down and takes a huge chunk out of his neck. However, due to its quick-strike nature and its glaring absence of blood, there are far gnarlier deaths in the game.
Dylan Mauled By A Werewolf
The squeamish length of Dylan's protracted werewolf death in The Quarry is one of the reasons it's so hard to watch in the game, making it feel like a genuine horror movie. While controlling the crane in the scrapyard to save Kaitlyn, choosing the wrong path will lead to Dylan getting brutally mauled, slashed, and pulverized by a werewolf.
First, the werewolf bursts through the crane window, mounting legitimate tension and suspense. The beast then lunges atop Dylan, bites his right arm off while a geyser of gore erupts, slashes the kid's throat with a large claw, and rips his left arm off for good measure, leaving Kaitlyn to look on in abject horror.
Bobby & Chris' Shotgun Evisceration
With two kills for the price of one, it's hard to discount the brutal nature of Bobby and Chris Hackett's fate in the game. First, as the werewolf Bobby enters the house, he is shot in the face by Laura at point-blank range, which results in a fountain of gore erupting across the screen in easily one of the bloodiest moments in the game.
Somehow, the werewolf continues attacking Chris, ripping him apart until he also becomes infected. This prompts Ryan to pull a shotgun loaded with silver and blow Bobby's head off clean-off its spinal column with one direct shot. The sheer body count, amount of bloodshed, and the dual death modes make the entire sequence viscerally enthralling and graphically unnerving.
Kaitlyn's Disembowelment
While a playthrough involving Kaitlyn being crushed under the storage tanker is worth a mention, her gory disembowelment at the voracious mouth of a werewolf is too hardcore to omit. Upon inspecting the Lodge, Kaitlyn will be met by a werewolf who ascends the stairs, approaches her, and in one fell swoop stabs her with a claw in the throat, picks her up with one hand as she gurgles blood, and slams her body to the ground thrice.
If that wasn't enough, Kaitlyn's moribund body is picked up and thrashed around again before her entire stomach is dismembered as the werewolf plunges his fangs into her guts, drops her to the floor again, and proceeds to feast on her innards. Forceful, hyper-gory, and definitely overkill in ways that rival the most memorable werewolf movies on record.
Travis' Ripped-Off Head
Whereas Jedediah Hackett's death left a lot to be desired given his odious transgressions, Travis Hackett's gruesome demise is much more satisfying given all he put the counselors through. In one playthrough, the corrupt sheriff kidnaps Laura and drives away with her in his vehicle, only to have his head ripped off by a monstrous werewolf.
As Travis and Laura drive down the road at night, Travis thinks he's gotten away with his dastardly crimes. Then, suddenly, a giant hand punches through the roof of the car, forcefully grabs Travis' face, and in one quick instant, tears his whole head off, leaving nothing but a bloody stump for a neck to drive the vehicle. It's unbelievably brutal, especially seeing the werewolf jump off the roof of the car with Travis' decapitated head in tow.
Constance's Point Blank Face Shot
Unlike her husband Jedediah, Constance Hackett gets more than she deserves when her entire face is gorily shot off at point-blank range with a shotgun, leaving her visage resembling an ultra-grisly Jackson Pollock painting. The fatality occurs when Laura inspects the lodge and Constance tries to take the shotgun away from her.
After a minor struggle with the weapon, the gun goes off and obliterates Constance's face on impact, with the flash of the gun lighting up the grotesque damage for a split second. The real kicker is the image of Constance lying on the floor with her face missing, replaced by a cavity of pulpy brain matter.
Laura & Ryan's Double Homicide
Doubling the body count in one savagely gory werewolf attack, the horrifying homicides of Laura and Ryan is nothing to sneeze at. Just as the two stop one werewolf attack in the woods together and let their guard down for a split second, a second lethal lycanthrope lunges out and violently rips Laura's head off with a single punch, forcing blood to splatter in all directions.
As Laura's headless corpse drops to the rocks, the werewolf goes after Ryan, forcefully pins him and down, and begins taking rapacious bites at the teen's torso until his ribcage and chest cavity is exposed. An absolute showstopper of abject carnage sure to make every player wince.
Abigail's Gory Decapitation
Without question, Abigail's sensationalized decapitation in front of all of her friends is the most shockingly brutal death in The Quarry. Just as she realizes one of her fellow counselors has turned into a werewolf, she trains a shotgun on him but refuses to pull the trigger.
As a result, the werewolf attacks Abigail, grabs her by the shoulders, slams her against the wall, and brutally bites her neck. The monster repeats the process again, this time biting Abi's head plum off her shoulders and spitting it across the room. As the camera focuses on Abi's decapitated head and her shocked facial expression, her body slowly crumples to the floor, where the camera highlights her gore-sodden brain stem. The death is savage on its own, but the way the others witness it firsthand makes it the most disturbing.
