Supermassive Games' new release of the interactive survival horror game The Quarry is already drawing rave reviews for the immersive story-driven narrative it features, allowing players to determine various outcomes based on their decision-making. The story follows nine camp counselors during their stay at Hackett's Quarry summer camp, with two playthrough options enabling gamers to either kill or save all of the counselors.
For those opting to save all of the counselors during their playthrough, it's worth noting that some of the characters are much harder to save than others. While some have multiple chances of being saved, others require extremely harrowing tasks to complete.
Max Brinly
Due to having just one potential death as a playable character in chapter 10, Max is fairly easy to keep alive in The Quarry. While marooned on an island, a quick-time event will take place, giving players the option to remain on the island or swim to shore. Swimming will lead to Max encountering Caleb in werewolf form while remaining on the island will keep Max safe.
Therefore, choosing to stay on the island and simply wait out the night on the docks will keep Max alive. The only real issue is ensuring Laura and Ryan stay alive in Chapter 9, allowing the latter to shoot the monster and prevent Max from being transformed. Other than that, Max isn't endangered all that much.
Nick Furcillo
Although Nick is one of the first characters to be marauded by a werewolf in the game, saving him comes down to one key moment and strategic gameplay option, making him much easier to rescue than the others. After being turned into his monstrous form and held by the Hacketts in Chapter 8, Ryan and Laura will approach an electric cage holding Nick and Jacob captive. As Ryan and Jacob speak, Laura will attempt to shoot Nick.
To save Nick's life in Chapter 8, a player must control Ryan and immediately prevent Laura from opening the cage and shooting a round at Nick when the prompt appears onscreen. Distracting Laura long enough will prevent her from lethally shooting Nick, who will later be healed in Chapter 10 when the werewolf curse is lifted.
Dylan Lenivy
As one of the smartest characters who often makes sure to keep company, Dylan is not that hard to save in the hotly-anticipated 2022 video game. His first harrowing encounter comes in Chapter 5 when his hand is bitten by a werewolf in the radio hut. In order to save Dylan's life, using Ryan to sever his bitten hand and rid the infection with the nearby chainsaw is ideal.
Later in Chapter 9, Dylan faces more peril alongside Kaitlyn in the junkyard. As Kaitlyn looks around for a car to control, a werewolf will accost Dylan. To save his life, Kaitlyn must pick up the car using a nearby crane and smash the car on top of the werewolf during the QTE. Doing so will keep Dylan safe for the rest of the way.
Kaitlyn Ka
Despite being one of the last characters to die in the game, Kaitlyn has no shortage of potential death modes. That said, if Dylan manages to rescue her as she does for him in the scrapyard, she'll remain safe for quite a while until encountering the monstrous Caleb in Chapter 10.
To save Kaitlyn at the end, players must hit every command and follow every QTE, activate the Prepare for Attack option when located at the Septimus Hackett portrait inside the Lodge, wait patiently until he attacks, and fend off his aggression by shooting him with bullets. Scaling the rafter beams and window sill will help Kaitlyn evade Caleb. Finally, Kaitlyn must find Abigail and obtain the silver shotgun shell she puts on the ground and use to blast Caleb to death. While it sounds easy enough, one wrong move will lead to Kaitlyn's demise, making the consequences feel like a real horror movie.
Abigail Blyg
Abigail has at least three grisly potential deaths in the game, but saving her really comes down to two strategic points in her storyline. As long as players pay attention to all of the quick-time events and ensure Emma's survival at the treehouse beforehand, saving Abigail isn't too much of a chore.
During Nick's werewolf transformation in Chapter 6, Abigail will encounter the monster at the pool house. Once Nick launches Abigail across the room, she will land beside a shotgun. Aside from avoiding being bitten by Nick, Abigail must shoot Nick with the shotgun to scare him off in order to survive. Precisely aiming at and hitting a rabid quadrupedal beast is not so easy, but a direct hit will keep her safe for the rest of the game provided that Emma remains unbitten.
Emma Mountebank
With at least five potential deaths in the highly-anticipated horror game, Emma is a pretty tough character to rescue. One false move will lead to her swift demise at the claws and fangs of a werewolf beginning in Chapter 4, making the Death Rewind option an advantageous one. Upon approaching a Treehouse, Emma is given the option to go through the treehouse or enter a trapdoor.
To save Emma, a player must first search the bags in the treehouse before opening the trap door. Failing to do so will lead to Emma being mauled by Max. Next, players must stun the werewolf by using a taser and take photographic evidence of the beast. After following all of the QTEs, Emma must use bear mace to thwart a werewolf attack after being cornered. Finally, Emma must slowly zipline from the roof of the treehouse past the werewolf in order to safely escape. It's a difficult series of tasks where one mistake will cost players dearly.
Ryan Erzhaler
Like Emma, Ryan has at minimum five potential deaths in the game. However, his connection with Laura complicates matters. In Chapter 9, saving Ryan requires pulling the knife out of his stab wound perpetrated by Bobby. While this makes Ryan bleed out faster, he makes him nimbler to escape further harm. More counterintuitive yet, Ryan must allow Laura to bite him and turn him into a werewolf, thereby increasing his healing power.
Later in Chapter 9, Ryan must shoot Chris accurately with a silver shotgun shell, or else he will suffer a gory demise. Finally, in Chapter 10, Ryan and Laura must successfully slay Silas the White Wolf without hesitation. As such, Ryan's quite a difficult character to keep alive.
Jacob Custos
With at least seven different ways of dying in the game, the sheer number of potential fatalities makes Jacob a chore to continue saving. However, none are all that hard on their own. Beginning in Chapter 3 when Jacob dives into the lake to retrieve the rotor arm, slowly untangling the chain Jacob gets caught in will prevent his death by drowning. In Chapter 4, Jacob must allow Bobby to smear wolf blood on his face while caught in the snare trap and refrain from attempting to escape.
The best way to save Jacob is to play as Ryan and avoid shooting into the bushes both times he hears strange noises. Shooting into the bushes will kill Jacob on the spot. Finally, in Chapter 8, Ryan must properly solve the circuit breaker combination and send him back to the lodge unharmed.
Laura Kearney
Although she has at least four potential deaths in Chapters 9 and 10, the awesome female horror game protagonist Laura's inextricable link with Ryan makes her survival more difficult than many. To save her life, players must begin strategizing in Chapter 7 when she is abducted by Sheriff Travis and held in a prison. First, a player must find a spoon in the cell and use it to unlock a hiding place for Laura. Later, Laura must sneak upstairs to find and hide a syringe loaded with sedatives in order to incapacitate Travis.
In Chapter 9, saving Laura requires her to take the shotgun from Constance, defeat Jedediah in an attack after holding her breath in the bathtub, and having Ryan shoot Chris, which will lift the werewolf curse. In Chapter 10, a player must deliberately fail the third QTE to defeat Silas the Wolf and keep Laura alive for the remainder.
