Summary

  • The Strangers trilogy might delve deeper into the killers' motives, potentially changing the tone of the films.
  • Keeping the killers' backgrounds mysterious was a big part of the original film's scare factor.
  • Madeline Petsch will reprise her role as Maya in all three movies, adding continuity to the trilogy's story.

three entries of the Strangers franchise.

The Strangers: Chapter One will be released on May 17, 2024. Interestingly, all three chapters of the Strangers trilogy were filmed simultaneously, indicating that they will all be released in 2024. As teased in the trailer, the new Strangers trilogy will give more insight into the killers' backgrounds and motives. This runs a risk for the franchise, however, since it's much more terrifying knowing that they are just random people killing without clear reasons.

The Strangers Trilogy Giving The Killers A Motive Could Ruin What Makes Them So Scary

With three new movies set to be released in The Strangers franchise, the backstories of the killers will inevitably be discovered and explored at a much greater depth than in the original film. Even The Strangers: Prey at Night kept with the original movie's theme of concealing the killers' motivations, leaving the possibility open that they simply didn't have one at all. This notion will be more difficult to sustain over the three new movies and could result in a very different film in of themes and tone.

On the plus side, the trailer from The Strangers: Chapter One promising revelations about the killers' identities and backstories could be the new trilogy's greatest appeal. In order for the new trilogy of The Strangers to really work, it will have to stay firmly rooted in reality as the original had, creating its terror from the plausibility of the plot. If the backstories of the killers end up being thoughtfully constructed, The Strangers: Chapter One could be even better than the original film.

The Strangers Trilogy Strategy Can Still Pay Off, But The Killers Are The Biggest Factor

A killer stands in the window in The Strangers

If The Strangers is a 3-part story, the killers will have to be involved in all of the installments, which requires some continuity in the form of the protagonist as well. The Strangers: Chapter One lead actor Madeline Petsch will reprise her role as Maya in all three movies, which makes for a more solid foundation of the case for a trilogy. The trilogy needs to be more than the same repeated formula, especially with each installment being released in the same year. There are many questions surrounding The Strangers: Chapter One but answers will arrive in mid-May 2024.
