With the release of The Substance continuing a clever 2024 horror trend since both tie into women's importance in the genre.

Coralie Fargeat's film follows Elizabeth Sparkle (Moore) as she tries to enhance her physical appearance with a substance she injects into herself. The trailer features body imagery of women that almost look like real-life Barbie dolls, which is a stark contrast to Elizabeth's body undergoing severe pain from her injections. Ultimately, The Substance tries to take down absurd beauty standards with this body horror and imagery. These themes will help Moore obtain a particular horror movie status, for which she has always had the potential.

The Substance Means Demi Moore Can Finally Be A Scream Queen

Demi Moore angrily smears her lipstick in the mirror in The Substance

The trailer for The Substance includes Moore literally screaming a few times as she injects herself to enhance her physical appearance. However, this is just the trailer. There are certainly more opportunities for Moore's character to do so throughout the film. Thus, The Substance could lead to Moore becoming a scream queen. Given Moore's outstanding acting skills, she could become one of the best modern scream queens in horror movies because of this film. She could then potentially, and hopefully, star in more horror movies in the future.

2024 has been an excellent year for horror films, and Moore will not be this year's only rising scream queen. Immaculate, and she undoubtedly has the potential to return to this status in future projects. All of these scream queens of 2024 make the year full of excellent horror. Moore ing the ranks of Sweeney and other 2024 scream queens will allow her to be a reason why 2024 is both a great and frightening year for horror flicks.

More scream queens of 2024 include Mia Goth (MaXXXine), Maika Monroe (Longlegs), and Kathryn Newton (Abigail).

The Substance Is Not Demi Moore's First Horror Movie Role

She Appears In Mr. Brooks

Demi Moore in Mr. Brooks

Mr. Brooks, which also stars Kevin Costner, is a crime, thriller, and horror film. It follows Mr. Brooks (Costner), a businessman who is secretly a serial killer that Detective Tracy Atwood (Moore) tries to track down. Bruce A. Evans' $48.1 million movie includes more thriller and crime aspects than horror. After all, few scenes actually feature Mr. Brooks murdering anyone, and a lot of the story involves law enforcement tracking him down. Nevertheless, horror is still present when he does make his kills.

She has no reason to be a scream queen. On the other hand, her character in The Substance appears to be the main victim and seems to have good reasons for being a scream queen.

Although Moore stars in this crime horror flick, her character is not a scream queen. Detective Atwood is certainly a complex and determined character who experiences several difficult circumstances throughout the film. The difference between her character in Mr. Brooks and The Substance, is that Detective Atwood is not the primary victim in the movie. She has no reason to be a scream queen. On the other hand, her character in The Substance appears to be the main victim and seems to have good reasons for being a scream queen.

I’m Surprised Demi Moore Was Never A Scream Queen

She Has Always Had The Potential

Since Moore starred in Mr. Brooks in 2007, I am surprised she had never been considered for a role that would make her a scream queen until now. She clearly shows her potential for this status in her role alongside Costner. That being said, Moore becoming a scream queen is long overdue. At least Moore will make her scream queen debut in a great horror movie with feminist messages. Perhaps the timing of her becoming a scream queen is excellent for her career. Regardless, I would have loved to see her as a scream queen in horror movies before 2024.

Most of Moore's famous movies are romantic dramas, so she has had few opportunities to display her scream queen potential. However, she proves her worthiness every time she has exhibited her potential.

This actress did have a television comeback, as Moore starred in one of horror's biggest shows: American Horror Story. She has a recurring role in the "Delicate" season, further setting up her potential to become a scream queen. After all, several scream queens first claimed this reputation from this Ryan Murphy series. Some examples include Emma Roberts, Taissa Farmiga, and Sarah Paulson. Now that Moore has starred in this series, it is no wonder her role in The Substance will make her a scream queen.

After years of observing her fantastic career, I am thrilled to see Demi Moore become a scream queen in The Substance. Given that she starred in the body horror nightmare in American Horror Story season 12 and Mr. Brooks, it is great to see her finally achieve this iconic status. Most scream queens are heavily honored in the horror genre. Moore can now receive this same respect. With the release of The Substance and more horror movies, it will be interesting to see if 2024 produces more scream queens.
