The Handmaid’s Tale will end with season 6, premiering on April 8. However, it was previously confirmed that The Testaments would be adapted as a spinoff series, but details remain largely scarce.

In a recent interview with TV Insider, Chang revealed that The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will feature cliffhangers for the next show. Because of this, as Chang explained, audiences will learn more in The Testaments, but the final stretch of The Handmaid’s Tale will still wrap up most plot pointsin some very satisfying ways.” Read Chang’s comments below:

For sure, there will be cliffhangers for The Testaments, so it doesn’t conclude everything. So any fans that are left wanting more are going to get more in The Testaments, which will be great for them. But it does conclude in some very satisfying ways many of the storylines, but not every single one.

What This Means For The Handmaid's Tale Season 6

The Final Season Will Tie Into The Testaments

The Testaments was published in 2019 and takes place 15 years after its predecessor, The Handmaid’s Tale, following Aunt Lydia and two young women who begin working for Mayday to dismantle Gilead. As mentioned, not much is known about the spinoff series, apart from Ann Dowd reprising her role, and the casting additions of Chase Infiniti and Lucy Halliday. Based on Chang’s comments, though, The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will set the stage for The Testaments, so it is worth wondering how this final installment will leave certain narrative threads incomplete.

Ann Dowd confirmed she is part of The Testaments cast. But which other Handmaid's Tale characters could feature in the series?

Former episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale might have already planted seeds for the spinoff, as evidenced by Aunt Lydia showing sympathy and trepidation concerning the treatment of handmaids and her role in that, and seeking change. The season 5 finale also saw an attempt on June’s life, and Luke got arrested at a Canadian train station, while June and Nichole departed. These events likely set up what’s to come in season 6, but they may also lead to The Testaments later on, where Aunt Lydia and Nichole will play notable parts.

Our Take On The Handmaid's Tale Spinoff

It Can Effectively Continue The Show's Story

Given how the show has developed through five seasons, the final installment of The Handmaid’s Tale, with these potential cliffhangers, can make exploring the story beyond June possible. For fans of the series and/or those familiar with the story of The Testaments, the spinoff should be able to build excitement following the conclusion of The Handmaid’s Tale. Chang’s comments about the finale and how it teases the follow-up further suggest that it can successfully continue on, and it will be interesting to see how The Testaments comes together when more is revealed.
