Netflix debuted its latest reality dating show, The Ultimatum was filmed in Austin, Texas, and Temptation Island takes place in sunny Hawaii.
While many reality TV fans see both shows feature struggling couples, their formulas are slightly different and delivered very different results in their respective finales. Temptation Island season 4 has disappointed fans, as many feel that the cast is too young and boring, while the drama seems almost nonexistent.
Its previous seasons made for entertaining TV, as couples were separated and started flirting with the other singles almost immediately. There have been couples to make it out of Temptation Island stronger than ever over the seasons, and fans will have to wait and see what kind of track record The Ultimatum has in its future seasons.
Alike: Relationships In Trouble
Both Temptation Island and The Ultimatum show actual couples in long-term relationships who are having severe issues. On Temptation Island, couples are dealing with trust issues and miscommunications (to name a few), and are looking to put their partner to the ultimate test of being surrounded by attractive singles. The Ultimatum shows couples who have had enough and are either looking to get married to their partner or break up entirely. Presenting pairs who are really in love with each other adds a similar emotional element to both shows, as the couples navigate being single and explore other options.
Different: Living Situations
One key difference between The Ultimatum and Temptation Island is how the cast is separated. On The Ultimatum, the entire cast is together, and there is a smaller group of people overall, so everyone gets to know each other. The couples separate to go on dates with other people, but are nearby watching how each date goes. They all gather at a large table and decide who they want to spend three weeks living with in a trial marriage and then three weeks in their original pairing. On Temptation Island, couples are immediately separated from one another to meet the singles. The only time they see each other is through a screen during the emotional bonfire ceremonies, but they cannot directly speak to their partner during the process.
Alike: Leave Together, Alone, Or With New Partner
Both shows give the cast three options in the finale: to leave as a stronger couple, leave alone, or leave with a new partner. For Temptation Island, that means one of the singles caught their eye, and they move on with them. For The Ultimatum, this means two couples are fractured and form a new couple at the end. All of those outcomes have occurred on both shows and have caused a lot of drama.
Different: Success Rate
Despite The Ultimatum being in its first season, it already has a higher success rate for couples staying together than some seasons of Temptation Island, even though they have more couples. Many of the pairs coming onto The Ultimatum are still happily together, but the same cannot be said for Temptation Island. Though there are fan favorite couples like season 3's Kristen Ramos and Julian Allen, who resisted temptation throughout their time on the show, most leave alone or with one of the singles.
