Bonnie never got as much attention in The Vampire Diaries as the main trio. Despite that, the show established her as one of the most competent, strong characters. Bonnie underwent a serious transformation on the show as she discovered her magical abilities and eventually became very powerful, so much so she was instrumental in saving the entire city in the last episode.

Various aspects of Bonnie's storyline didn't sit well with some of the fans, though. Either because they believed Bonnie should have made different choices in the romantic area or because they simply disliked some aspect of Bonnie's personality. Considering Bonnie was such an important character, it will come as no surprise that the fans had a lot to say about her on Reddit.

Bonnie & Damon Should Have Ended Up Together

Bonnie hugs Damon in The Vampire Diaries.

Bonnie never had too much luck in romantic relationships since her most prominent romances, with Jeremy and Enzo, ended up in failure. Ildom1987 believes that Bonnie would have been much better off if she chose Damon as her partner, as these two were already good friends. Ildom1987 thinks that: "Bonnie should have figured out a way to tie her and Damon's life force together. Giving her a version of immortality without having to give up her powers and allowing Damon to remain a vampire."

While a good theory, it wouldn't work in practice since Damon was pretty much Elena's soulmate and in love with her by the point, he and Bonnie became genuine friends. The creators also might have intended to differentiate the show from the books since Bonnie and Damon date in the source material.

Bonnie & Kai Had The Best Chemistry On The Show

Damon, Bonnie, and Kai in the prison world in The Vampire Diaries

The Vampire Diaries worked with many villains but Kai was one of the most prominent ones. As a powerful wizard, he and Bonnie were antagonistic toward each other right from the start.

However, KarmicVore suggests that "Bonnie and Kai had the most chemistry of all the couples on the show and are subsequently the best ship." The problem with this is that Bonnie hated Kai, especially once he caused Elena to sleep until the day Bonnie would die which cut off Bonnie from her best friend.

Bonnie Is The Best Written Character

Bonnie never got as much love from the audience as other characters. Despite the fact, that, according to Naw207, she's the best-written character on the show. Naw207 thinks Bonnie "is the one who has the most development in the solo arc department compared to others."

It's true that Bonnie's storyline was rarely ever based on her romantic relationships with others and the show gave equal space to Bonnie's effort to master her skills as well as her ambivalent relationship toward vampires or her friendship with Elena, Caroline, and Damon. All of this made Bonnie a more fleshed-out character than some people might believe.

Bonnie Is A Hypocrite

One problem copperfishy has when it comes to Bonnie is her hypocritical nature. According to copperfishy, Bonnie "spent six full seasons hating vampires only for her to fall in love with one."

What this reproach doesn't take into consideration is that Bonnie simply grew more mature over time and realized there was more to vampires than she had originally thought. Also, it took her a while to build a bond with Enzo, and the fact that it didn't happen overnight proves that Bonnie was much more stable in her attitude toward vampires than one could think.

Bonnie & Jeremy Should Have Stayed Together

Bonnie and Jeremy

Considering the fact that Jeremy doesn't exist in the books, the relationship between Bonnie and him was created for the show. Many fans didn't enjoy the couple and were relieved when the two broke up.

However, Running_Noodles wishes that "Enzo and Bonnie were never a thing and she stayed with Jeremy." Had that happened, the story could have been very different because it's unlikely Jeremy would have left Mystic Falls under these circumstances. And had he stayed, not only wouldn't have Bonnie gotten together with Enzo but Jeremy could have also helped the heroes fight their enemies.

Bonnie Shouldn't Have Been Able To Wake Elena

One of the major plot points was Elena's magic-induced sleep that allowed Nina Dobrev to leave the show. Kai was responsible for the spell and made it clear that Elena wouldn't wake up again as long as Bonnie lived. Yet Bonnie was able to break the spell in the final episode.

One Reddit , whose has since been deleted, pointed out that "Bonnie should have died. The fact they didn't even try to cure the spell all through the show then magically in the final episode Bonnie found a way even though Kai said there were no loopholes." An easy solution to this problem would be to explain how exactly Bonnie did it but unfortunately, the show didn't take the time to let the audience know.

Bonnie Would Have Been Great As A Villain

Bonnie gets her magic back in The Vampire Diaries

Bonnie wasn't always kind to her friends - such as when she refused to talk to Caroline after Caroline's transformation to a vampire - but she never was a bad guy. However, anigerianloveszobo thinks "It would have been great to see Bonnie get angry at her constant mistreatment and Kai to be a villain. Just imagine an evil powerful witch couple."

While seeing Bonnie in a different light would be interesting, The Vampire Diaries had multiple instances in which previously good characters turned evil - such as Caroline or Elena when they turned their emotions off as vampires. Bonnie had no such ability so it makes sense she remained on the side of good the entire time. Plus, since she hated Kai it would make it very difficult for Bonnie to fall for him and his side.

Bonnie & Enzo Weren't A Good Couple

Bonnie and Enzo in the Vampire Diaries

Despite Bonnie's lack of luck in love, when she got together with Enzo, it seemed things would get better for her. Unfortunately, their romance abruptly ended when Stefan killed Enzo. The romance was popular among most fans, but not all. Ildom1987 thinks that Bonnie and Enzo weren't such a good couple simply because the show didn't take enough time to establish them as such - and that "the writers spent more time on his relationship with Damon and Lily than his relationship with Bonnie. And to be completely honest they both had better chemistry with other characters."

It's true that Bonnie and Enzo weren't given as much space as Bonnie and some other people she dated. However, it was obvious right from the start that Enzo wasn't a bad person and he only needed someone to bring out his better side. Bonnie was that someone, and as a result, they were happy together until Enzo's untimely death.
