Katherine Pierce, originally known as Katerina Petrova, started out as one of the main antagonists of the successful vampire show The Vampire Diaries. Katherine was the reason why the main male characters, Stefan and Damon Salvatore became vampires, and since she was the doppelganger of Elena Gilbert, she had a lot of space to wreak havoc in the town of Mystic Falls.

But despite her many heinous actions and the people she killed, there was more to Katherine than met the eye. She eventually died but once again made her comeback later in the show. Here are 10 questions the fans might still have about Katherine.

Why Didn't Katherine Have More Powers?

Before the original vampires comprised of the Mikaelson family came along, Katherine was one of the oldest vampires on the show. The Vampire Diaries vampires grow stronger as they become older in vampiric years. Not only do they have the ability to better control their bloodlust, if they choose to do so in the first place, but they're also physically stronger and better at compelling people, influencing their minds.

In the first episode of the series Damon, who's much younger than Katherine, demonstrated some remarkable powers, so why didn't Katherine ever do the same since she should be more powerful than Damon in every area?

Why Didn't Katherine Kill Elena?

Throughout the series, Katherine repeatedly showed her slight for Elena and the hate towards the girl who was wearing her face. Katherine also didn't like the fact that Elena took Stefan from her. Katherine dated both Stefan and Damon at the same time when they were still human in the 1860s.

But she only truly loved Stefan and it enraged her when she saw him happily dating Elena upon coming back to Mystic Falls. All that begs the question of why Katherine didn't kill Elena. Yes, she needed her alive for the ritual Klaus wanted to do, but after that, Elena was a fair game.

Why Didn't Katherine Stay Away?

Katherine Pierce The Vampire Diaries

Katherine Pierce is many things but her most defining trait (besides the fact that she's good at manipulating people) is her strong will to live, her survival instinct. That's why it doesn't really make that much sense that Katherine would come back to Mystic Falls in the first place since when she lived in the city in the 1860s, she was outed as a vampire and people tried to kill her.

Plus, there was a strong chance she would come across the original vampires in the city but Katherine came anyway. Had she stayed away, she might have also stayed alive.

Why Did Katherine Love Both Brothers?

Damon and Stefan attempt to stake Katherine in the Vampire Diaries

As said above, Katherine likes to manipulate people, to use them for her advantage in any way she wants. But she's also calculating and intelligent so she must have realized that taking both Stefan and Damon as her lovers when she came to Mystic Falls would no doubt lead to problems.

First of all, it would be somewhat scandalous even today, let alone in the 1860s when the society had even stricter moral codex when it came to young unwed women and their behavior. But Katherine also could have saved herself a lot of trouble had she persued only one Salvatore brother.

Why Didn't Katherine Look For Her Daughter?

Long before Katherine appeared in Mystic Falls and seduced both of the Salvatore brothers, she led a completely different life. Katherine was born in the 15th century and she was banished by her family when she gave birth to a child out of wedlock which was a big tabu back then and meant that Katherine disgraced both herself and her family.

Katherine became a vampire a few years later and she spent the following five hundred years running away from revengeful Klaus. But had she tried to look for her daughter, she might have discovered that her child Nadia was alive all this time since she also became a vampire.

Did Katherine Love Klaus?

Katherine may have spent a bigger part of five centuries running away from Klaus but even when she was on the run, she still managed to find time for romance and took on lovers, most notably Damon and Stefan Salvatore. But before she met them, she seemed quite infatuated with Klaus when the two first met.

Klaus was able to be charming if he wanted to and Katherine was still much more naive and trusting back then. It's easy to imagine that she could have fallen for him only to be shocked when she realized that he wanted to kill her and not marry her.

Could Have Elijah And Katherine Stayed Together?

Klaus may have been attracted to Katherine as well but if he was, he didn't allow himself to let it show and focused on executing his plan, which included sacrificing Katherine in a ritual. But there was another Mikaelson brother who genuinely loved Katherine and she seemed to have cared for him in return.

Elijah was always more gentle than his brother and he tried to persuade Klaus to spare Katherine's life but to no avail. Katherine and Elijah briefly dated in the 21st century but they broke up when Elijah realized Katherine lied to him. They had amazing chemistry together, though, and one has to wonder if they could have stayed together had Katherine told the truth.

Why Didn't Katherine Defeat Elena?

Even if Katherine didn't kill Elena before Elena became a vampire as well, she still could have easily done it even once Elena ed the ranks of the vampires. After all, Katherine had more than five hundred years on Elena and as such, she was much stronger.

That's why it doesn't really make sense why she wasn't able to defeat Elena when the two women fought in the final episode of the fourth season. Katherine had a clear advantage over Elena and she should have been able to finish her off before Elena could even get to the cure she decided to use against Katherine.

Why Didn't Damon Recognize Katherine?

In the first season, Damon believes that Katherine was trapped in the tomb and is determined to break her out, no matter what it takes since he's still in love with Katherine and has been since 1864. He has no idea that Katherine is actually out and about, happily doing whatever she wants... until he does.

In the final episode of the first season, Damon kisses Katherine but he thinks she's Elena. Why wasn't he able to recognize her, though? Vampires have many different physiological signs than humans and Damon has strong enough senses to recognize the difference between a vampire and a human.

Could Have Katherine Lived Happily Ever After?

Katherin in the Vampire Diaries

Many fans of The Vampire Diaries loved Katherine despite, or maybe because of all the things she did and were upset when she died. But maybe things could have been much different and Katherine could have gotten her happy ending after all. After five hundred years spent running and fearing for her life, she'd certainly deserve a bit of happiness.

She could have even ended up either with Elijah or with Stefan who both loved her and cared for her. Stefan and Katherine briefly got together when she became a human again and it looked like she could have been good for each other, had things worked out differently.
