Besides offering a compelling love story, original vampire Klaus. Klaus, played by the British actor Joseph Morgan, easily became a fan favorite despite the fact he was responsible for the deaths of several established characters, such as Elena's aunt Jenna.
Klaus eventually befriended the heroes to a certain degree and when he left Mystic Falls behind, he remained on mostly good with The Vampire Diaries heroes. Despite his popularity among the fans, there are still some people who weren't that thrilled about Klaus and whose opinions differ greatly from most of the viewers.
Klaus Isn't As Interesting As Other Villains
Klaus is a popular villain but the Reddit Cjisthatoneguy doesn't seem to think Klaus is as awesome as many fans believe him to be. As they put it "I just thought he was average. I think villains like Kai and Katherine had way more to offer and he just wanted hybrids. Also, he treats his family like dirt so why do people love him so much."
It could be argued that Klaus had much more in mind than just the hybrids. One of his main goals was to get rid of his father and he didn't want to end up alone.
Klaus's Fans Are Biased
A called pmpvnk pointed out that Klaus's fans love him for doing the same things they hate Damon Salvatore for doing. pmpvnk also thought that Klaus "definitely did NOT need to act the way he did to all those innocent people and families."
It's true that both Klaus and Damon hurt other people, seemingly with no regard for their health, but one major difference between them is that Klaus is more calculated in his actions and doesn't snap as often as Damon seems to do.
Klaus Doesn't Change That Much
Klaus becomes less evil as the show progresses but that still doesn't count as enough of a character change, according to some fans of the show.
parduscat pointed out that Klaus doesn't really change so much because he has no need to do so - as he's one of the strongest beings in The Vampire Diaries universe and it's almost impossible to permanently hurt him. Klaus does eventually become slightly milder and kinder but at the same time, he never lets go of his old violent ways.
Klaus Should Have Become A Human
BrittBrat893 came up with the thought that Klaus should have become human. That's not something many viewers considered but according to the , Klaus would deserve this since he "is that rich guy who always gets his way and doesn't have any consequences to his actions and I am so sick of it."
Klaus does get away with a lot more things than other people but it's difficult to say whether him becoming a human wouldn't negatively impact his entire vampire line.
The Originals Made Klaus Too Weak
Klaus was by far one of the biggest threats when he showed up on The Vampire Diaries. But a The Originals nerfed him, he kept getting beat even though he's supposed to be feared by all as the strongest Vampire in existence."
It's possible Klaus's character works better when he stands against other, more heroic characters, but many fans enjoyed seeing Klaus's character development on The Originals.
Klaus Is The Worst Of All
Despite the fact that Klaus is still a fictional character, he grated some viewers so strongly they didn't mince their words. Such as the Mika95 who stated that "I can honestly say that Klaus is not redeemable or interesting. He is a literal monster, and the bad in his life is not an excuse for actually be worse than Hitler. His rampant destruction and general abuse of his family makes him a thousand times worse them Mikael."
While Klaus does do a lot of evil deeds, calling him worse than Adolf Hitler who was responsible for the death of millions of actual people seems like an overstatement, to put it mildly.
Klaus Lost His Charm Due To Tantrums
Sc0rpi093 believes Klaus isn't so bad but didn't like what the screenwriters did with his character later on: "I liked him when he was just the evil antagonist but when they started trying to redeem him, actually not even that when they started giving him man pain temper tantrums is where my like for him as a character started waning quite a bit."
On one hand, Klaus was more open to revealing his emotions later on as a part of his character development (and that included said tantrums), but on the other hand, he was still ruthless enough to remain one of the most popular anti-heroes in The Vampire Diaries universe.
Klaus Is A More Simple Character Than People Believe
Many fans are convinced Klaus is one of the most complex characters of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals as well. However, a Randommook doesn't share the same opinion: "Klaus can pretty much be summed up with one sentence: He's a self-centered melodramatic vicious controlling bastard."
Considering how many different facets of his personality Klaus showcases in both TV series, it's easy to believe that's not the case. Especially when it comes to his behavior toward people he truly cares about, such as his daughter Hope.
Klaus And Caroline Don't Make Sense As A Couple
Even though a lot of people ship Klaus and Caroline and wish these two would have stayed together, some fans of The Vampire Diaries are more skeptical when it comes to their complicated relationship.Reddit Elizabeth doesn't understand why people ship the two: "Throughout almost the entire time Klaus was on TVD (especially at the start) she made it very clear she was not interested in him. She knew he really liked her and she took advantage of that especially when her friends told her that it was her job to distract him whenever they were up to something."
While Elizabeth does have a good point when she says Caroline deliberately distracted Klaus, it's also impossible to overlook the mutual attraction between them.
Klaus Didn't Need A Redemption Arc
More than one fan wasn't so thrilled with Klaus's transformation on The Originals. As the Reddit , Miaantezana6 pointed out: "The only change I saw was him becoming annoying, whiny, and crying too much. I preferred the impulsive, manipulative, badass Klaus from TVD who was always the smartest person in the room and always had a plan A through Z."
It proves that often the antagonists get the greatest love from the audience when they're just being plain evil.
