For months, it seemed as if fans of The Walking Dead were waiting on when the show creators would drop the bomb and announce an ending to the show.

The news finally dropped in September, when the series creators announced that AMC's flagship zombie series would be coming to an end after the eleventh season. For fans who have been on this hellish ride through the zombie apocalypse since 2010, there have been numerous scenarios that have floated on the internet about how the series will wrap up its story. Some that sound probable, and others that sound downright weird. Here are just a couple of examples of how The Walking Dead will end.

Best: A Civil War Will Kick-Off

As the series has shown viewers time-and-time again, the Walkers are not the only threat humanity has to face, and may not even be its biggest.

No, in this cruel and bleak world, the real enemies may be humanity itself, and there could be a civil war that kicks off between the survivors that may spell the true end to humanity as we know it.

Worst: Aliens Will Come And Take Over The World

It's not widely circulated, but there are some theories out there that an alien invasion may be on the horizon for the world.

This will take the series in such a far-off sci-fi bent that doesn't make any sense at all, mainly because throughout its run, there has been not a hint of an alien species spying on the Earth and its dead and undead inhabitants.

Best: The Walkers Will Finally Overwhelm The Survivors

The survivors have fought off the Walkers long enough, but could it be time for the Walkers to finally gain an upper hand on the humans? That could be a plausible scenario for how the series would end.

Of course, fans would want the series to end on a happy, cheery note. However, sometimes a happy ending isn't in the cards for everyone, and The Walking Dead is riped for an ending in which the Walkers will finally take over.

Worse: It Was All Just A TV Show

What worse way to end one of the more groundbreaking series to grace television screen than to pull a Punk'd move on its loyal fanbase?

Some have suggested that the end could be a Truman Show-like effect, in which fans will be transported into a control room, where behind-the-scenes people have been controlling the action all along. That would be a truly terrible way to go out.

Best: They Find A Cure

Since the main focus of The Walking Dead is on the zombies, there could be a scenario in season 11 where someone will develop a cure to reverse the effects of the Walkers and make them human again.

While this could be a likely scenario, it also presents a mixed-bag of sorts. Fans still don't really know how the Walkers turned into what they are in the first place. Maybe they will get an answer in season 11 that will make this scenario a much better bet, but one shall see.

Worst: The Survivors Land On A Remote Island

While this scenario isn't particularly far-fetched, this is still a pretty bad fan theory. It will be bad for the simple fact that the series will end in a manner most apocalyptic shows will end - with finding a remote island void of Walkers.

Sure, it would be a great ending for the show's favorite characters, but The Walking Dead has been a truly groundbreaking piece of work that would almost be ruined if the ending was so generic.

Best: Rick Finally Becomes A Walker

There are some theories floating around that The Walking Dead's ending won't be a true ending and it will merely be a setup for something bigger.

If so, one of the more plausible ways that this show could end is if Rick Grimes dies and finally becomes a Walker. That would be a truly twisted way to wrap the bow on this terrifying series.

Worst: It Was All In Rick's Head

The show opened with Rick waking up in a hospital bed and seeing that the world around him has gone downhill. There have been many theories that have been floating over the years that the entirety of The Walking Dead is all just a dream and that Rick is still laying in a hospital room in a coma.

It's not the absolute worse way for this show to end, but with all that the characters and fans have gone through over the years, this would be yet another mediocre way to wrap up the series.

Best: All Of The Shows Come Together And Form A Movie

This series has spawned two spin-offs, Fear Of The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond. There are some fan theories out there that the cast from all of the shows will merge together to try to fight off the Walkers, which could mean that the series will get a big-screen adaptation revolving around their fight.

This is an overly likely scenario, especially since fans are likely getting two new spin-offs soon, and there have been rumblings of a Walking Dead film coming to the big screen.

Worse: The Walker Population Will Die Out

The survivors have been fighting the Walker population for over 10 years now, and the undead zombies have shown no signs of slowing down since the first bite was shown on the screen.

Nevertheless, there are theories that the Walkers will simply die out and the survivors will go about repopulating and rebuilding the world. However, one has to think that, if the Walkers have survived this long, what are the odds they're simply going to just die out? Those odds are not that good.
