The Wild Robot release opened with a middling $35.8 million against its $78 million budget, but slowly and steadily rose to become one of the biggest animated hits of the year and of all time.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, The Wild Robot is projected to close out its seventh weekend in theaters with a three-day domestic box office total of $6 million. This will push its cumulative domestic total to $130.2 million. In addition to becoming the 13th movie of the year to the $130 million milestone, it has climbed up the all-time box office chart to become the 97th highest-grossing domestic animated release, in the process ing several titles including The Peanuts Movie, Robots, Migration, and Bee Movie.

What This Means For The Wild Robot

The Movie Can Keep Climbing

Although it is more than a month into its release, The Wild Robot has had a dazzling audience hold. In fact, its slim week-on-week drop was just 19%, which followed a nigh-on unprecedented 9.4% rise during its sixth weekend in domestic theaters. If it continues this minimal decline, it could gross another $4.8 million in theaters during its eighth weekend, bringing its cumulative domestic total to roughly $137 million and potentially even more, especially if Veterans Day Monday gives it an extra boost. Below, see how many movies it could on the chart, should that be the case.

Rank

Title

Domestic Gross

#96

Rio 2 (2014)

$131.5 million

#95

Chicken Little (2005)

$135.4 million

#94

Dinosaur (2000)

$137.7 million

#93

Disney's A Christmas Carol (2009)

$137.8 million

Many factors are contributing to this massive haul, including glowing The Wild Robot reviews earning the movie a near-perfect, Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% with a matching Verified Hot 98% audience score. The movie is also a buzzy contender for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. However, its prospects were also boosted by the release of the gory unrated slasher movie Terrifier 3, as reports reflected that underage viewers were buying tickets for the DreamWorks movie in order to sneak in to see Art the Clown's latest bloody rampage.

Our Take On The Wild Robot Box Office

The DreamWorks Hit Has Nothing Left To Prove

As holiday movie season heats up, the new DreamWorks movie will inevitably be pushed out of theaters by huge November blockbuster releases, including Wicked, Gladiator II, and Moana 2. However, even though The Wild Robot will probably never climb into the domestic Top 50, it has solidified itself as a respectable hit for the studio. This total is most likely enough to spawn a new major franchise in the vein of Shrek, The Boss Baby, Kung Fu Panda, or How to Train Your Dragon.
