The Winter King season 2 could have continued the Arthurian fantasy created by Sony Pictures Television and Bad Wolf Studios for MGM+, but it is canceled. The medieval period drama is an adaptation of Bernard Cornwell’s The Warlord Chronicles which loosely adapts Arthurian legend and ties the mysticism of the myth of Arthur and Camelot with the history of Dark Age Britain. The 2023 TV adaptation stars Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Iain De Ceastecker as Arthur Pendragon, and the cast of The Winter King is one of the key reasons anticipation for season 2 was high.

The cast isn’t the only reason hopes were high for a second season though, as the story of The Winter King proved to be incredibly suited for the small screen. The blend of Arthurian myth and real-life events, such as the introduction of Christianity to the British Isles and the rise and fall of Anglo-Saxon Britain are clever touches that elevate the series above mere fantasy. Unfortunately, MGM+ pulled the plug on the psuedo fantasy series.

MGM+ Cancels The Series After One Season

Derfel and Nimue look on in The Winter King

Unfortunately for fans of the upstart fantasy series, The Winter King after only one season. Though the streamer didn't explain their decision, a lack of viewership numbers is the most likely reason for the show being pulled. The Winter King wasn't the only show that got the ax in September 2024, and MGM+ also canceled Beacon 23 after two poorly-received seasons.

The Winter King season 1 concluded on November 5, 2023.

Many of the recurring and ing cast could have returned as well, and it’s also a guarantee that some new names would have ed.

While season finales are usually meant to be conclusive and explosive in their own right, the ending of The Winter King season 1 served more as a setup for season 2. After saving Derfel and Nimue, Arthur sets out for Dumnonia with the intention of killing Aelle and kicking the Saxons out of the territory. Obviously, that plot would likely have dominated season 2 of The Winter King. On the other hand, Merlin discovers the ancient Horn of Bran but finds it is filled with blood. That cleverly implied that the future of the show would be anything but soft and pleasant.

Based on Bernard Cornwell's book series, The Winter King is a historical fiction series that covers the first novel's events. The series retreads the tale of King Arthur with a new imagining; Arthur has been exiled, with the Saxons now in control of Camelot's throne, with Merlin nowhere to be found.
