With The Witcher season 3 set to release on Netflix, Ciri actor Freya Allan teased where her character's story is heading and how the season was changed to set up season 4. Based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's series of books of the same name, the fantasy show follows the stoic monster hunter Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) as he gets caught in a power struggle between various kingdoms. The season 1 finale saw Geralt finally uniting with Ciri, a young orphaned princess wielding an incredible power within her, derived from her Elder Blood.
Speaking with SFX Magazine (via The Witcher season 3 was changed to accommodate her season 4 journey. The actor explained that the season 3 story originally did not have much action for Ciri. With season 4 set to include her time with a violent gang called the Rats, season 3's script was revamped to have Ciri more involved. Read what Allan said below:
"In the original script, I didn’t have as much action. There was a lot of me standing around, waiting to get saved by Geralt and Yennefer. I just thought at this point, two seasons in and she spent the last season training, that could still be there."
"If we are not seeing her do anything yet, and then in season four she is going and ing a gang of killing Rats, it’s not really going to add up. I wanted it to feel like she started to use that training and put that into real life, although she’s not killing anyone yet, or shouldn’t be."
The Witcher Season 4 Will Mark a Big Change
Set to rid herself of the damsel-in-distress moniker in The Witcher season 3, Ciri will become a formidable ally as various forces close in. With Stregobor (Lars Mikkelsen) endlessly scheming for control and the mysterious powerful wraiths, known as the Wild Hunt, in pursuit of Ciri due to her Elder Blood, the princess will need to be trained and ready for the war to come.
A recent The Witcher season 3 trailer featured Ciri thoroughly engaged in combat and no longer standing on the sidelines while Geralt fought to protect her. Her increased proficiency with a sword is evident and will help her when she again finds herself separated from Geralt and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) and partners with the murderous Rats in season 4. Along with increased skill in melee combat, the trailer also showed her improvement with magic as she will be trained at the sorceress academy of Aretuza.
However, The Witcher's season 4's biggest change will occur outside the fantasy show's sprawling narrative. In late-2022, Cavill announced he was leaving the series despite his previous statement promising his commitment to the showrunner's vision. The Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth will replace Cavill in season 4. The news was met with immediate backlash from the show's loyal fanbase as they have come to pair Geralt's live-action portrayal with Cavill. Nevertheless, Cavill will undergo his final battle in The Witcher season 3.
