Theo Dimas is one of Only Murders in the Building season 1 centers around the murder of Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), another Arconia dweller, and Theo is a prime suspect.

Though most of Only Murders in the Building is centered around the main podcasting trio of Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), one particular episode is centered around Theo. Theo is Deaf, and Only Murders in the Building season 1, episode 7, "The Boy from 6B," is depicted almost entirely from his perspective, with no audible dialogue spoken, save three words. The episode was universally praised for its artistry and authentic disability representation. However, after season 1, Theo Dimas' role largely dwindled.

Why Is Theo Free In Only Murders In The Building?

He Was Released To Await Trial For Grave-Robbing

Before the events of the series, Tim Kono witnessed Theo accidentally push Zoe Cassidy (Olivia Reis) to her death, and Teddy threatened Tim to keep his mouth shut. When this came to light, the Only Murders in the Building podcast implicated the Dimases in Tim's murder, and they were arrested.

Hulu's quirky murder mystery comedy series Only Murders in the Building returned for its fourth season in 2024, and season 5 is on the way.

While they were innocent of the murder, with the culprit being Tim's former lover, Jan Bellows (Amy Ryan), Teddy and Theo were still guilty of committing a crime: grave robbing. Teddy ran a side business called Angel Inc., in which he sold jewelry stolen from dead bodies, with help from Theo. After being cleared of the murder charges, Teddy and Theo were released to await trial for their grave robbing, with Teddy being placed on house arrest.

In Only Murders in the Building, it's also revealed that Teddy Dimas is the biological father of Will Putnam, Oliver's son.

The Dimases trial is never shown, and from a storytelling standpoint, this makes sense, as the grave robbing was a season 1 plot twist that everyone's moved on from. And though he's flawed, Theo is ultimately a sympathetic character who should be free, especially because he makes every Only Murders storyline he's part of better. Theo being out of jail means that he's able to confront his father for involving him in his shady business and threatening his future. Embracing his independence, Theo even helps Mabel out in seasons 2 and 3, further proving his value to the show.

Where Is Theo In Only Murders In The Building Season 4?

Mabel Moved Out Of Teddy's Apartment & Actor James Caverly May Have Moved On

Though his role was diminished after Only Murders in the Building season 1, Theo pops up again in seasons 2 and 3, so it's curious that he's not in season 4, especially because in his last appearance, Mabel was crashing at his apartment. However, early into season 4, Mabel decides to start squatting in the vacant Dudenoff apartment in the west end of the Arconia. Theo is never mentioned in season 4, suggesting he and Mabel are no longer keeping in touch.

This is unfortunate, because their connection made for one of the most compelling Only Murders storylines. Season 4 also suffered from a massive glut of celebrity cameos, which cheapened the overall story. The best thing about the season was Howard actor Michael Cyril Creighton being promoted to series regular in the Only Murders in the Building cast. Moving forward, the series would do well to lean more on these beloved unique characters, whether it's Howard or Theo, and less on famous faces.

However, Theo's season 4 absence may be because actor James Caverly has moved on. Caverly spoke to Business Insider about wanting to take on more roles in which a character's hearing loss isn't at the forefront of their story. He said that, "true inclusion would mean more disabled people in the writing room, behind the camera, and on the production team" and that he wants to eradicate the "tired portrayal of disabled characters on TV."

Caverly certainly raised a lot of awareness with "The Boy from 6B", so perhaps he's now looking for a lead role in his own series. Given his talents, he would surely deliver an incredible performance worth watching — even if it comes at the cost of no more Theo in Only Murders in the Building.
