While there has been much to love throughout the years, there have also been some shocking and devastating deaths throughout the series. Despite knowing Jack Pearson would die early on, his death was heartbreaking. However, the deaths that came before and after him were also devastating losses.
Dr. K's Wife
Dr. K delivered Kevin and Kate and continued to be a point of inspiration for the young parents and their children. However, he had his own devastating story. In an earlier season, fans got to witness Dr. K's life following the tragic loss of his beloved wife, Caroline.
Though his wife is never able to be a character in the show, it was compelling to watch the older man struggle to move forward with his life after he lost her. Though fans never got to meet Caroline, it was clear she was very important to this essential side character.
Miguel's Father
Fans learned a lot from the Miguel Centric episode of This Is Us. Though he was often seen as Jack's best friend and then Rebecca's second husband, this storyline allowed the audience to see Miguel through the ages.
During the time following Jack's death and Miguel moving away, he loses his father. It was clear that his father was never happy about having to leave Puerto Rico and was uncomfortable with his son conforming to an American lifestyle. Though fans didn't get to know his father well, they felt the sadness of Miguel losing his parent after not being very close to him over the years.
Kate's Miscarriage
Kate's was a heartbreaking moment fans felt as strongly as the character did. The couple was over the moon when they found out they were expecting a child despite the risks pertaining to Kate's age and weight.
When they lost the pregnancy, the two struggled to cope with the loss of the promise of a child. This point in Kate's plotline was essential for her fighting to have a child and build a happy family of her own. Though it wasn't meant to be, that didn't stop their hope or the devastation following the loss.
The Boy In Vietnam
Nicky was struggling to stay sober and accept his time in Vietnam after he was drafted into the army. Though he tried to kick his habit, he accidentally killed a child on a boat while teaching the boy how to catch fish by throwing hand grenades into the water.

This moment not only ended the life of a young person, but it led Nicky down a life of exile and substance abuse. The Vietnam War was a terrible circumstance with which many of the soldiers couldn't cope following their return. Nicky was no exception, and couldn't overcome the devastation of accidentally ending an innocent life and in turn losing his beloved older brother. In her teen years, Beth lost her father, Abe, to cancer. Beth was very close with her father, who encouraged her success and happiness. Though her family seemed to cope more effectively than the Pearsons following the loss of Jack, Abe's sickness may have prepared the Clarkes for their loss. However, being prepared didn't stop Beth from struggling with the loss of her father and losing that influential figure in her life. Fans got to see how much he meant to her in the episode "Little Island Girl: Part 2" when Beth used her father's words of wisdom to fuel her ion. In the final season of this series, Jack travels to Ohio to help prepare for his mother's funeral. Though we see them interact earlier in life, Jack had not seen much of Marilyn following her departure from her home and abusive husband.
One of the most devastating parts of Marilyn's death was learning that Jack didn't really know his mother and hadn't made an effort to see her more after she moved away. It was hard to watch Marilyn fall victim to abuse at the hand of her husband, but it was satisfying for Jack to learn she eventually had a quiet, happy life before she ed. Miguel spent his later years dedicated to taking care of Rebecca as her Altzheimer's advanced and she required more attention. It was a shock to see Miguel away before his wife did, leaving her confused and wondering where he was long after his death. Though it took Rebecca's children a while to accept their father's best friend married their mother, it was clear by the time he died that he was a valued, loved member of the family. Still, it was devastating to see him not take care of himself. Well into his adulthood, Randall Pearson finally sought out his long-lost biological father, William Hill. Though he expected to tell William off and leave, Randall ended up having a cherished, loving relationship with his father before his death. Randall and William had one of the best relationships in This Is Us, respecting and guiding each other as they grew to know each other. Though William died only months after meeting his family, he quickly became a beloved member of Randall's household, and the whole family mourned his loss. In the penultimate episode of this series, the matriarch of the Pearson family ed away. Rebecca was an exceptional woman and mother, rearing the people that captured the hearts of the audience. She had an amazing storyline, with two love stories, with Jack and Miguel, and a complex, deeply moving relationship with her three children that left audiences satisfied but also devasted by her loss. Fans got to witness the captivating story of Rebecca's life from childhood to old age. Though she wasn't always perfect, she was a relatable, lovable character that will be missed. Fans knew right from the first season that Jack would die, but they were left waiting to see exactly how it happened. When Jack dies of cardiac arrest due to inhaling too much smoke after their house fire, the audience mourned his sudden loss despite knowing that it had to happen somehow. Jack Pearson is seen throughout the series as an influential friend, husband, and father. Anyone who watched him in action knew how exceptional he was as a person, despite his flaws, and it was a devastating aspect of the show knowing Jack never got to see his children grow up and prosper.
