Warning: contains spoilers for Thor #20 and Captain Marvel #35!

The two Avengers from Rogue of the X-Men. But in Thor #20 and Captain Marvel #35, both Avengers lose control of their powers, and they quite literally have minds of their own.

In current comics continuity, Thor can no longer pick up Mjolnir with ease and confidence. It periodically becomes too heavy for him to lift or even move off the ground - but others such as Loki (who should never be able to lift the hammer, considering his many crimes), can lift it without struggling at all. One one particular adventure, Mjolnir has gone missing, and Thor and Odin set out to find the lost weapon. After coming across multiple scenes of slaughter (Eitri the dwarf and all of his kind at Nidaviller have been killed), Thor finds that Mjolnir has been lifted by its own lightning, and the weapon appears to be sentient.

Likewise, in Captain Marvel#35, the villain Vox Supreme has entombed Captain Marvel inside a coffin that she is unable to destroy with her raw strength. She focuses her power and eventually manifests a being of fiery red-white energy that bears a striking resemblance to her in her Binary form. The being maintains its form even as Carol is trapped in Vox Supreme's black suits, but the being - thanks to some guidance from Phyla-Vell - is able to free Carol from her prison. The fiery form cannot talk, but understands commands and clearly has a will of its own.

Both Thor and Captain Marvel now have manifestations of their own power walking among the Marvel Universe. While both beings have only recently been discovered, the two couldn't be further apart in of intentionality. Captain Marvel's energy projection truly wants to help Carol and destroy her enemies, but Mjolnir's lightning form appears diabolical. The so-called "God of Hammers" has slaughtered the dwarves, the frost giants, and destroyed an entire town on Midgard.

It remains to be seen exactly how Carol and Thor's energy projections will factor in to future storylines. Neither is fully understood, and in the case of Thor's, has only appeared in one . But regardless, both Thor and Captain Marvel now share a strange bond that no other superhero can truly claim.
