Readers who have been keeping up with Immortal Thor won’t be surprised by this turn of events. Thor’s fate has been a throughline of the whole series. Loki’s narration as Norse ‘skald,’ or storyteller, has constantly stated that Thor is headed towards a dark fate, and almost every Asgardian, from Skurge, to the Enchantress, to Odin himself, are aware of the fact. Even Thor knows at this point that his days may be numbered.

The God Of Thunder Will Go Down Swinging

Thor is almost certainly going to die at the hands by Thor’s mother Gaia as recompense for how humanity has been treating Gaia’s domain of the Earth, and even Thor can’t hope to stop them. He managed to defeat Toranos, the first God of Thunder, by granting the Elder God empathy, but the other Utgard-Gods are wise to that trick now.

When Thor dies, he won’t go down without a fight, and he has made this clear throughout the series. One of the throughlines of Immortal Thor has been the return of Skurge, who wishes to sacrifice himself to save Thor. The twist is that Thor doesn’t want anyone to take his place, and is willing to fight Skurge to ensure that no-one else dies in the Odinson’s place. The recently released Immortal Thor #20 – written by Al Ewing, with art by Jan Bazaldua – ended with this fight finally coming to a head, but it looks like Skurge won’t be winning.

At this point, the more important question isn’t whether Thor will die, but what will happen when he does. Thor didn’t have an heir until recently, when Enchantress brought the pair’s alternate future son, Magni, back to life, hoping she could corrupt the younger god. Instead, Magni turned out to be a hero, and Enchantress can’t steal his inheritance without murdering her own son. Thor is headed to his death with a heavy heart, believing that this will be his final fight, but what sort of world he is going to leave behind remains uncertain.
