Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder already has a completed script from writer-director Taika Waititi ahead of production getting started on the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in early 2020. Chris Hemsworth has been a leading star of the MCU since debuting as the God of Thunder in 2011's Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh. In the years since, Hemsworth suited up alongside Earth's Mightiest Heroes in all four installments of The Avengers series and two more entries of his solo film series. Now, though fellow heroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) have wrapped up their stories, Thor continues on.
The Avengers: Endgame ending saw Thor: Love and Thunder was confirmed for a 2021 release date during Marvel Studios' at San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Making the annoucement was Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, returning Thor: Ragnarok director Waititi, Hemsworth and Thompson - along with a surprise appearance from Natalie Portman. Now, a new update on the movie reveals how far along Thor: Love and Thunder truly is.
According to the Waititi's new movie project, the writer-director already has a completed script for Thor: Love and Thunder, which makes sense as the movie is scheduled to begin production in early 2020. That leaves Waititi with the rest of 2019 to promote his next film, Jojo Rabbit, then shoot his recently announced movie, Next Goal Wins, before getting started on Thor 4 early next year.
When Thor: Ragnarok hit theaters in 2017, it was a critical and financial success for Marvel Studios, making it a no brainer to bring MCU Phase 4 will release, Marvel Studios has no doubt been working on all the planned movies and TV shows for quite some time now. It should come as no surprise to fans that projects like Thor: Love and Thunder were developed in secret, especially considering Marvel Studios keeps much of its plans under wraps.
Still, this latest update on Thor: Love and Thunder serves as a reminder that Marvel Studios' Phase 4 will release quickly over the next two years. Even though Thor 4 is the last film in Phase 4 and won't hit theaters until late 2021, production will ramp up at the start of next year. That's sure to excite fans, who are no doubt looking forward to seeing Portman's Jane Foster suit up as Mighty Thor in Love and Thunder. With production beginning in early 2020, fans may get a look at Portman in costume as Thor soon enough, which will drum up even more anticipation for Thor: Love and Thunder ahead of its 2021 release.
