While some sitcoms are often quite profound, most tend to stick to the comedic side of things. So, when these shows abruptly change their tone and get deep, it's quite unexpected. There are a few examples that come to mind for me. Howard learning his mother died in <em>The Big Bang Theory </em>stuck with me for a while, and Chandler and Monica finding out their fertility results in <em>Friends</em> did too, but the most impactful was Charlie Kelly's breakdown when carrying his father's body up the hill in <em>It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia</em>.
