While players are lost in the endless realms of gaming, whether it be saving a princess from a fire-breathing turtle, hacking away at various mythological monsters, or blasting away hellspawn with a BFG, sometimes they can forget to stop and smell the pixelated roses.
Nintendo's titles have thousands of Easter eggs and hidden treasures, but there are those that never fail to put a smile on a gamer's face. Have a look at these ten for some secret surprises.
It’s-A-Me (The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past)
Easily one of the most beloved titles in the Zelda series, A Link to the Past features an easily missed detail inside various houses in the village. If one looks closely at some of the pictures on the walls, they will find small portraits of Mario smiling back at them. Pulling on one of these pictures releases a number of Rupees as a little surprise for attentive players.
Here Lies Link (Final Fantasy)
The original Final Fantasy would be the catalyst that helped found the JRPG genre, as well as spawn a legion of sequels that continues to expand to this day.
What might surprise some players is the presence of a familiar Nintendo character buried in a grave outside of the elf village. If one looks closely, there is a grave that reads "Here lies Link." It might not be a chipper little nod, but it definitely references a familiar face.
Hadouken Mode (Mega Man X)
If it's two titles Mega Man X series on the SNES, an armor set for the Blue Bomber allows for Mega Man to use Ryu and Ken's Hadouken attack instead of his Mega-Buster. The results are satisfying, to say the least.
Is That Chun Li? (Breath Of Fire)
This one might be a little more difficult to find, but it's definitely one that will grab the attention of many Street Fighter fans.
In Breath of Fire, when the party has an encounter with a rather greedy magician, they can peek into a hidden window into an ading room to see Chun Li practicing her Hyakuretsukyaku kicks. Perhaps she's practicing for her next tournament? Maybe Vega is hiding out here somewhere too?
Title Screen Toys (Mario Paint)
Mario Paint is an unusual entry that definitely has a place in the hearts of many SNES owners. But before making various pieces of pixelated artwork, stop and poke around on the game's title screen and see what happens. Players who take a moment to play with the title's letters might find a various array of surprises and animation sequences for them to enjoy.
Sleeping on the Job (Super Mario RPG)
Along with trying his hand at painting and composing, Mario also dipped his toe into the RPG genre as well. In Super Mario RPG, Mario teamed up with his own party of adventurers and explored the Mushroom Kingdom.
However, it seems he wasn't the only one venturing forth on a new quest. Both Link and Samus can be seen sleeping in beds located in different resting places. Being heroes has to be exhausting work.
Sharp Dressed Man (Super Mario 3)
Super Mario 3 was one of the most revolutionary and beloved platformers on the NES, with new worlds and more powerups than the plumber had ever seen before. During the game, Mario will have to steal back magic wands from the Koopalings to restore the kings of the various kingdoms to their natural states. If Mario does this while in one of the suits, the king will make a different remark, acknowledging the plumber's outfit.
Toto, We're Not in Hyrule Anymore (Link's Awakening)
Link's adventures have sent him across the lands of Hyrule and back again, but there's something odd about this little island he washes upon during the events of Link's Awakening. The place is full of strange creatures that one would never see in the kingdom of Hylia.
Things like Chain-Chomps, Goombas, and even King Wart make an appearance in this game. Link may or may not have ingested a few mushrooms before this quest.
Across the Universe (Earthbound Series)
The Beatles are perhaps the most influential band in history, and no series has had more nods to the Fab Four thanEarthbound. From various Beatles lyrics scattered throughout the game's dialogue to a literal yellow submarine sitting in one of the game's environments, it was obvious the developers had a penchant for a certain group of lads from Liverpool.
The Immortal Robin Williams (Breath Of The Wild)
The late great Robin Williams was not only one of the world's most beloved performers, but a gamer as well. Williams was such a fan of the Legend of Zelda series that Nintendo had him do a few commercials for them and even went as far as to honor him in Breath of the Wild. The NPC Dayto is an exact copy for the famous comedian, firmly and permanently landing him a spot in one of his favorite games.
