WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for TITANS #16!
An honest mistake that escalates into a conflict between the Titans ends with a Leaguer making it clear they’ve lost all trust and respect for one of the Titans. This revelation raises the question of whether this hero can ever regain their standing with DC’s greatest or if they’re now blacklisted for good.
"You don’t have the best track record with alien forms. Haven’t you learned your lesson?" - The Question
The lasting impacts of the events of Absolute Power and the DC ALL IN Special on the Titans are finally explored in John Layman and Pete Woods' Titans #16. One of the most significant developments is that while the Titans remain an independent team, they are now all official of the Justice League.
However, the excitement over their new partnership quickly fades during their tour of the Watchtower when Beast Boy accidentally provokes one of the alien creatures aboard the station, triggering it to morph into a dangerous threat. Although the Titans manage to contain it, the incident leads to a tense confrontation with the Justice League’s head of security, Renee "The Question" Montoya.
The Question Has Officially Lost All Respect & Trust in Beast Boy
Beast Boy's Mistakes in Beast World Are Far From Forgotten
After the threat is contained, The Question tears into Beast Boy, berating him for his "stupidity" and asking, "What kind of idiot move was that, Beast Boy?" Garfield quickly apologizes, explaining that he was only trying to calm the creature down and didn’t mean to provoke its destructive rage. However, Montoya is unforgiving, continuing her verbal assault and accusing Beast Boy of nearly destroying the Watchtower. She delivers a cutting remark that reveals the distrust and lack of respect some hold for him: "You don’t have the best track record with alien forms. Haven’t you learned your lesson?"
This jab refers to the time Beast Boy transformed into the massive Star Conqueror, known as "Garro," to defeat the Necrostar during the catastrophic events of Beast World. While Beast Boy succeeded in halting the world-ending threat, the cost of his heroism was immense. He lost control while in the Star Conqueror form, releasing spores that mutated millions of people into animal hybrids and becoming a dangerous force himself. Despite his intentions to save the world, the collateral damage was undeniable. Montoya's biting remark makes it clear that Beast Boy’s role in the devastation is far from forgotten—or forgiven.
How Deep Does the Distrust of Beast Boy Run in the Justice League?
The Justice League/Titan Partnership Is Already Beginning to Crumble
Though The Question is the only one to voice it, it's likely that other Justice League share her distrust of Beast Boy. The question now is how widespread this mistrust is and which heroes view Garfield differently after the Beast World incident. This growing tension could threaten the Justice League and Titans' partnership, especially given the Titans' fierce loyalty to one another. Donna Troy’s immediate defense of Beast Boy, calling out The Question for her harsh words, highlights their protective nature. This clash may be the first sign of the Justice League / Titans alliance starting to unravel.
