Summary

  • Titans' Beast World event will feature Beast Boy's terrifying transformation into a Star Conqueror, warping his connection to the animal kingdom.
  • Other heroes and villains will also undergo animal transformations, such as werewolf Batman and phoenix Power Girl, giving the DC Universe a completely different look.
  • Titans: Beast World #1 is coming from DC Comics on November 28.

As Justice League's very first villain, Starro - and so can presumably use its many flying drones to mind-control its victims in an attempt to take over the planet.

To stop the Necrostar, Beast Boy will make a huge sacrifice - using his shapeshifting abilities to become a Star Conqueror himself (nicknamed 'Garro.') However, that's just the set-up for the event - Beast Boy's transformation will send his powers haywire, merging his connection to the animal kingdom with the Necrostar's drones, and turning DC's heroes and villains into new, animal forms, complete with vicious instincts. In an interview with Popverse, Tom Taylor shared some of Ivan Reis' stunning art from Titans: Beast World #1 (with Danny Miki, Brad Anderson and Wes Abbott), showing Beast Boy undergoing an incredibly disturbing transformation which draws on all his animal forms. This is presumably the moment Beast Boy becomes Garro.

While the event is a fun idea with heroes getting outlandish new designs, Taylor makes it clear there will be major consequences, promising that Beast World will change the DC Universe going forwards and even "break" some beloved characters. He says:

When you’re working in-continuity, you get told “These are the greatest toys in the world. Don’t break them!” We’re kind of breaking some toys here. ... Here’s the thing, you often hear with an event “The DC Universe will never be the same again!” and you go “Okay, sure. That sounds likely.” [laughs] In this case, I can actually tell you that the DC Universe will never be the same again because it sets up a new status quo for the DC Universe. This is something that we’ve been discussing for a very long time, places where we wanted to get pieces on the board, players to be in positions that they’ve never been in before. ... We’ve been wanting to change things quite fundamentally. At the end of this, the DC Universe does look a bit different.

BEAST BOY GARRO BEAST WORLD TITANS

Beast Boy is one of DC's most beloved heroes, and is currently enjoying a fan-favorite relationship with teammate Raven, having only recently processed the trauma of being shot by Deathstroke in Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. Having taken over protection of the Earth from the Justice League, Gar has been taking his new responsibilities incredibly seriously, urging the Titans to return to the sites of superhero battles to help heal nature and repair the damage done to innocent lives. Sadly, no superhero gets to exist at their peak for long, and Beast Boy will now find his consciousness subsumed into the Garro monstrosity.

Of course, Beast Boy isn't the only hero getting a wild transformation. With a lion Black Adam, wolf Red Hood, and bizarre muscular Harley Quinn Rabbit, the DC Universe is going to look very different during Beast World. However, with Beast Boy technically the cause of this worldwide disaster, will the Titans be seen as the heroes who saved the world from the Necrostar, or as the group who kicked off a far larger disaster? Taylor points out that Beast World is the Titans' first ever official event comic, and in this context, it would be tragic for the team to come out of Beast World having proved they're not ready for the top spot.

Titans fans have long prayed the former sidekicks would get to move up and become the world's protectors, and as Beast World begins, that's exactly where the team are. However, as Beast Boy loses himself and takes the rest of the DC Universe with him, will this be the Titans' greatest triumph, or their most shameful defeat?
