New gameplay footage for the TMNT: Shredder's Revenge gameplay video focusing on the rat ninja master's movement and fighting style since the title was originally revealed in the spring of last year.
TMNT: Shredder's Revenge will not be the first game of its kind; it will be following the iconic 1991 arcade beat-em-up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time, in which players were able to take control of all four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as they punched, kicked, and slashed their way through a series of intimidating enemies. The game could be played solo but was more often than not enjoyed by multiple players, with each individual gamer controlling one of the turtles. While Turtles In Time is perhaps the most iconic video game based on this property, it is far from the only one. These beloved characters have been featured in a number of action games over the years, even appearing as TMNT fighters in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.
The classic cartoon gang of lovable fighters is returning to its side-scroller roots with TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, this time with a little help from Master Splinter. A new gameplay video shared on the official PlayStation YouTube highlights some of Splinter's moves and overall approach to fighting in this colorful brawler. As Splinter makes his way through a hostile subway station, the developers of the game comment about how this is the first time that Master Splinter is being offered as a playable character in a game of this type, noting that they wanted him to be realized as a character who has honed his technique more than any other.
Viewers of this clip will likely notice just how stunning and vibrant the animations for the new TMNT game's Master Splinter are. His base walk speed is somewhat slow as he inconspicuously shambles along on his cane, but he can launch into lightning-fast flurries of punches and kicks when the need arises. This contrast between slow and methodical and aggressive and vicious is unique and certainly fitting for the elder martial arts mentor.
More has yet to be revealed about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, but fans are likely already getting excited at the prospect of taking control of Master Splinter. The retro art style for the next side-scrolling TMNT game is also sure to be a welcome throwback to the classic arcade games of the 80s and 90s. Gamers will have to wait until the game gets a release date to see if Master Splinter's inclusion is one that benefits the game or harms it.
