Almost every movie at one point or another attempts to be funny, and even in the most serious of thrillers, there's a lighthearted scene or two for a brief moment of levity. But it doesn't always land, and the bad and ridiculous dialogue stands out like a sore thumb.
Redditors have so many opinions on what are the most insultingly bad and ridiculous lines in movies. Whether it's nonsensical exposition, weird ad-libs, or every single line of dialogue in Batman & Robin, these quotes have stuck with Redditors for years, but not in a good way.
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
"She Got A Fat Ass" - Niobe
Though it seems to have changed in The Matrix Resurrections, one of the noble things about the Matrix series and what sets it apart from other blockbuster franchises is just how it takes itself so seriously. It's almost endearing. But MayhemMaven reminds people that there are a couple of attempts at humor that don't necessarily land.
As the Redditor explains, the above quote is a "reference to the ship hitting stuff while they are flying." And while a select few Redditors think The Matrix Revolutions is good, between this cringey one-liner and the endless exposition, there's a reason it's the lowest-rated movie in the series.
Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
"Genocide Schmenocide" - Brixton
The Fast and Furious franchise isn't exactly known for its gripping dialogue or the way it's delivered. And the way the series is so melodramatic with its monologues about family has become a running gag amongst fans.
But the spin-off of the main series, Hobbs & Shaw, takes the ridiculous dialogue to a whole other level. Django_7 points out the moment when Brixton Lore exclaims "genocide schmenocide" when he's being told that killing millions of people is wrong. The Redditor says that they "still think about this line once a month."
Suicide Squad (2016)
"This Is Katana! She's Got My Back! She Could Cut All You In Half With One Sword Stroke Just Like Mowing The Lawn. I'd Advise Not Getting Killed By Her. Her Sword Traps The Souls Of Its Victims!" - Rick Flag
When asked what the worst line of dialogue in a movie is, Suicide Squad, and though the sequel, The Suicide Squad was a huge improvement, there are still some unforgivable moments in the original movie.
The Redditor points out that one of those moments is when Katana is introduced on the plane. It's the laziest, clunkiest piece of exposition ever found in a movie and it's hard to believe that the dialogue made it past the first draft. It's one of the cringiest DCEU one-liners and it's impossible not to wince at the line.
Heat (1995)
"She's Got A Great Ass!" - Vincent Hanna
The Matrix Revolutions isn't the only movie with off-the-cuff lines about big asses. This line in Heat comes from out of nowhere when Hanna (Al Pacino) is interrogating Alan (Hank Azaria) about Charlene. Adrenochrome93 explains that the line is "utterly ridiculous how Pacino delivers it."
But in this case, though it's ridiculous, that doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. The line is so hilarious and entertaining, especially because of the way it's delivered. It is the actor at his absolute best, as it perfectly combines both his incredible adlib skills, as Pacino improvised the line, and his frantic energy.
Batman & Robin (1997)
“Hi Freeze, I’m Batman.” - Batman
People could pick any random page from the Batman & Robin screenplay and they'd find several ridiculous lines of dialogue, but that's why the film is 'so bad it's good.' KingofInvisibility thinks the most ridiculous of all the lines in the movie is the way Batman introduces himself to Mr. Freeze.
The line is so casual that it's weird, almost as if they're at a mixer or a meet and greet. However, as the MCU has had so much success with its goofy one-liners, whether fans want to it it or not, it was the 1997 movie that did it first, and it's why Batman & Robin is underrated.
X-Men (2000)
"Do You Know What Happens To Toads Struck By Lightning? The Same Thing That Happens To Everything Else" - Storm
The X-Men franchise has had a rocky history. The series includes some true masterpieces like X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Though 2000's X-Men was a promising start to the series, it still features some goofy dialogue.
Flinkaroo points at the line Storm throws at Toad right before she electrocutes him. When she asks the question, it seems as if she's about to say something enlightening, but it turns out to be utterly pointless, and as the Redditor succinctly puts it, "Like, duh."
Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019)
"Somehow, Palpatine Returned" - Poe
Somehow, The Last Jedi, never mind both of them. Part of the problem was a lot of the dialogue, and the whole "They Fly Now" line has become a viral meme, but it's "Somehow, Palpatine returned" that had so many fans raising their eyebrows.
Jrazz80 hilariously notes that "you can see the pain in Oscar Isaac’s face when he has to say this franchise ruining line." It's the laziest possible way to shoehorn in the iconic villain, as it doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and the movie doesn't attempt to detail why.
Suicide Squad (2016)
"All That Chit Chat's Gonna Get You Hurt"- The Joker
Rick Flag's bewildering exposition isn't the only dialogue-related problem in 2016's Suicide Squad. Though there are theories that could make Joker more interesting, Jared Leto's gangster rapper-like depiction of the clown prince of crime has been criticized to no end, including his mumbly dialogue.
Snakes On A Plane (2006)
"I Am Sick And Tired Of These Mother******g Snakes On This Mother******g Plane!"
Snakes On A Plane was the start of the trend of intentionally bad B-movie-influenced flicks, and it opened the floodgates for films like Sharknado to become popular. The_Nomadic_Nerd refers to the one memorable moment in the movie as one of the most ridiculous lines ever.
Even people who haven't seen the movie still know the line well and will quote it to no end, which just goes to show how ridiculous but iconic it is. But the Redditor follows up by retracting the statement, saying, "Never mind, that’s actually the greatest line ever in a movie."
Point Break (1991)
"I am an FBI agent!"
While Keanu Reeves throws everything he's got into every role, performs his own stunts, and is "the internet's boyfriend," he didn't always give Point Break, When frustrated with Bodhi, Johnny Utah (Reeves) reveals that he is, in fact, an FBI agent.
MarvelousMuch says, "don’t get me wrong, I love the movie, but that moment felt ridiculous." No real FBI agent would ever exclaim that, and it's the delivery that makes the line even more outrageous than it needs to be. But the movie wouldn't be the same without it, and the only way it could have been a more typical Reeves line was if he tagged "dude" onto the end.
