Superhero movies wouldn't be as popular today if it wasn't for the success of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man films in the 2000s, and the Peter Parker star has an unsurprisingly high net worth. Maguire first rose to prominence as an actor in the late '90s, often playing soft-spoken, somewhat dorky characters like in Pleasantville and The Cider House Rules. With this experience, Maguire was perfect to play the kind-hearted Peter Parker in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. The actor has stepped out of the spotlight in recent years, though Babylon and Spider-Man: No Way Home are beyond memorable.

Maguire was born in Santa Monica, California to parents Wendy and Vincent. While most parents want their kids to avoid the spotlight, Maguire's mother was the opposite, and reportedly paid him $100 to pursue drama instead of the culinary arts when he was in the sixth grade. This was clearly money well spent as, though Maguire didn't finish high school, he found huge success in Hollywood. In 2007, Maguire married jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer, and together they have two children — a daughter born in 2006 and a son born in 2009. Maguire and Meyer divorced in 2020.

Why Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 Never Happened

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 was already in development when it was canceled. However, Tobey Maguire's return was unlikely to happen from the start.

For the first Spider-Man (2002), Maguire earned $4 million. That figure was bumped up significantly for Spider-Man 2 (2004), which saw Maguire walk away with $17.5 million plus 5% of the movie's backend. Spider-Man 3 (2007) earned Maguire a smaller paycheck, at $15 million, but a higher take of the box office gross — 7.5%. Maguire also reportedly commanded a salary of $12.5 million for Seabiscuit (2003).

Maguire Is A Cancer

Tobey Maguire was born on June 27, 1975, making him 49 years old in 2024. The actor's zodiac sign is Cancer, a water sign represented by the symbol of the crab. InStyle says that Cancers possess "nurturing, sensitive, [and] comionate" traits and that they're known for their "goofy, ingratiating sense of humor."

These are certainly traits seen in his most famous characters, including Peter Parker and Pleasantville's David, so Maguire sure knows how to portray a quintessential Cancer. Standing at a shorter-than-average, 5 feet, 8 inches, Maguire is also perfect at embodying these underdog characters.

Tobey Maguire's Poker Career Explained

Tobey Maguire's poker career has been well-documented, and a lot of it is not flattering for the star. The Spider-Man actor reportedly first began playing tournament poker in 2004, and competed on ESPN's 2005, 2006, and 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event Championship. In addition to these tournaments, Maguire, along with A-list celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck, reportedly participated in illegal high-stakes poker games that took place in luxurious Beverly Hills hotels.

In 2011, THR reported that Maguire had been named in a lawsuit due to these high-stakes games. The lawsuit alleged that Maguire had won over $300,000 from CEO of Ruderman Capital Partners, Brad Ruderman, and that the winnings were "ill-gotten gains from Ruderman’s clients." A settlement of $80,000 was reached after Maguire claimed that, to the best of his knowledge, this was all he had won from Ruderman. The actor also stated that he had no knowledge of Ruderman's Ponzi scheme.

Though this appears to be the end of Maguire's legal troubles, his personal reputation also took a hit due to his poker career. In Molly's Game, a 2017 movie about entrepreneur Molly Bloom's underground poker empire, it's widely believed that Michael Cera's boorish and cruel character, "Player X", is an avatar for Maguire.

Though not in the film, one particularly unflattering rumor states that Maguire allegedly once asked Bloom to bark like a seal for a $1000 chip. It's unknown if this is why Tobey Maguire is no longer at the top of the Hollywood A-list, but either way, he has a cushy net worth to fall back on.
