recently concluded its final episode. During this time, Loki has received critical acclaim for its clever and unexpected storytelling, particularly when it comes to deepening the emotional evolution of the trickster god. According to Disney CEO, Bob Chapek, the first episode was the most-watched premiere of any series on the Disney+ platform, including popular Marvel installments, WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Unsurprisingly, the streaming service has confirmed a second season, which is currently in development.
Taking place after the events of the 2019 film, Avengers: Endgame, the show follows an alternate duplicate of Loki after he steals the Tesseract and creates an entirely new timeline. He faces unforeseen consequences when the Time Variance Authority (TVA) imprisons him for his infraction. The secretive organization, which exists as a separate entity outside time and space, works to make sure that the timeline runs smoothly. Due to Loki’s illicit arrival, which threatens to undermine their production, the TVA informs Loki that he can help them mend the timeline and fight incoming danger. If he doesn’t, he will be erased from existence due to his identity as a “time variant.”
While answering fan questions on Tumblr, Hiddleston shared which line he liked the most from the Marvel series. Acknowledging the personal growth of his character, he explained which scene truly resonated with him. Read what Hiddleston said below:
'Thank you, my friend,’ I think. Four words I’m not sure he has uttered in his life. Yeah. ‘Thank you, my friend,’ which is, of course, what Loki says to Mobius in episode five. So, you know, I loved saying that. It felt new. It felt like a new chord, something, a new utterance, a new expression for Loki. ‘Glorious purpose’ is obviously great, but maybe it was time to change his tune.'
In Loki, the titular protagonist meets and, eventually, befriends Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson). The eccentric character is an agent of the TVA who is assigned to investigate dangerous time criminals. Upon meeting Loki, Mobius initially interrogates him and chastises his attempt to break continuity of the timeline. Throughout the next few episodes, the two characters become allies and comrades. In the penultimate installment of the series, Loki is “pruned,” or erased from existence, by the TVA. However, he finds himself in the Void, along with alternate versions of himself who have survived there for decades, and hatches a plan to break free. Right before finally escaping, he reunites with Mobius. Although Mobius reaches out to shake his hand in farewell, Loki instead hugs him and says, “Thank you, my friend.”
Considering the wild success that Marvel shows have found on Disney+, it is certainly no surprise that Loki has already earned a devoted fan base. For years, Hiddleston’s character has beguiled viewers with his tongue-in-cheek quips and savvy maneuvering. At the same time, Loki has fleshed out not only the immensity of his powers but also the emotional core of the lead’s evolution. As Hiddleston himself noted, watching the trickster god find his humanity (and his friends) is something that any MCU fan can appreciate.
