Despite not wearing it in the many actors to play Superman in live-action was Welling as he starred in Smallville for a decade, telling the ultimate Clark Kent origin story before becoming the Man of Steel. While he officially became Superman in the Smallville series finale back in 2011, Welling didn't wear the costume, except for the shirt with the S-shield at the very end when doing the famous shirt-rip before closing out the show.

In an interview with Comic Book Movie, Welling was asked if he would be down to suiting up properly as Superman after the Smallville series finale, which aired over 13 years ago. After initially being against the idea back when the show aired, Welling is now actually open to donning the Superman costume, revealing the following reason:

You know, I think now because of the two boys that I have with my lovely wife...we have a bunch of costumes at home. It started out at the first Halloween and now we have, I don't know, 40 or 50 costumes. The one costume we don't have is the Superman costume. I asked my son why and he said, 'Because he's taken' and I said, 'By who?' 'By [you].' That was like, 'Alright, I think I'm open to the idea now.' So, if you know anybody, I think it would be great. I think it would be fun to be part of.

What Tom Welling's Superman Costume Comments Mean For Smallville

Welling being open to donning the Superman costume begs the question of whether or not it could actually happen. Even though Welling and Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum are developing a Smallville animated sequel TV show, there could still be a time when the show makes a comeback in the world of live-action. In the current age of TV revivals, Smallville is huge enough as a property that it could easily earn itself a live-action limited event series.

Having Smallville back in any capacity through live-action could also address the fate of Welling's Superman after the events of Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. This way, Clark could have his powers back now following his Arrowverse cameo, which would justify him being back in a suit. With the many versions of Superman costumes that exist in the lore, a live-action Smallville revival could tap into any of the iterations that would fit Welling's older Superman.

Our Take On Tom Welling Wanting To Wear The Superman Costume

It's great to hear Welling being open to wearing the Superman costume after Smallville, especially for a reason like doing it for his kids. Even though Smallville proved that Clark is Superman with or without the suit, it would genuinely be fascinating to see which version of the heroic costume Welling could wear after all these years. Hopefully, whether it is sooner or later, Smallville fans will, at some point, get to see Welling finally wearing the Superman uniform.
