Dev Patel has built his acting career throughout the years by taking on increasingly challenging roles. He began acting on television in the British series The Green Knight being his latest film set to release.

Although he has moved into more film work, he is still recognized from his television work as he continues to move ahead in his film career.

Chappie (2015) - 6.8

This Neill Blomkamp directed film imagines a near future where police robots patrol the streets and brutally stop any criminal activity. A group of civilians find a police robot and give him new programming, name him Chappie, and he begins to feel and think for himself.

The rest of the police force sees Chappie as a threat and decides he must be captured and destroyed at all costs. Dev Patel portrays a scientist who is caught between the brutish police, led by Hugh Jackman, and helping Chappie survive.

The Road Within (2014) - 7.1

This film follows the grieving Vincent (Robert Sheehan) as he copes with his mother's recent death and struggles with his Tourette syndrome. He escapes a behavioral facility his father put him in and runs away with two other patients, Zoë Kravitz and Dev Patel. The trio tries to travel to the ocean so Vincent can scatter his mother's ashes there.

The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015) - 7.2

This film, based on true events happening during World War I, follows the young Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel) as he goes from living in poverty in India and working menial jobs to finally being recognized for his mathematical brilliance. The film touches on his family in India, his time in England, and the hardships and racial prejudice he faced at Cambridge.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) - 7.2

This film centers on a hotel for retirees in India and follows several characters in their daily lives at the hotel. All of the characters go through hardships and romantic relationships as the worst and best moments of their lives are portrayed on the screen.

Dev Patel portrays Sonny Kapoor, the young, inexperienced, and energetic manager of the hotel.

I Lost My Body (2019) - 7.6

I Lost My Body

This fantastical animated film follows Naoufel as he tries to cope with the death of his parents and the new living situation he finds himself in. Dev Patel voices the main character in the English dubbed version of the film. Naoufel meets a young woman and immediately falls in love with her. He begins to navigate this new relationship while at the same time his own accidentally severed hand tries to make its way home to reconnect with him.

Hotel Mumbai (2018) - 7.6

This film was based on the real event of a terror attack on the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, India. The film follows a group trying to survive in the hotel focusing on employees who stayed to help save the guests of the hotel and a couple who tries to survive with their baby. Dev Patel portrays Arjun, a waiter that works together with hotel staff to help everyone survive and get back home to his family. Although the film is violent and terrifying, it focuses on the human aspect of the events.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008) - 8.0

This film switches back and forth between the present and past in the life of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) as he answers questions on India's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. The authorities assume he has been cheating in the game since he continues to win, but flashbacks show how he happens to know every answer from events in his life.  

Lion (2016) - 8.0

This film is based on the true story of a young boy born in India being separated from his family and adopted by a family in Australia, including his adoptive mother played by Nicole Kidman. Saroo (Dev Patel) grows up with the family in Australia, but he becomes determined to find his biological family so he travels back to India with the help of Google Earth. The film flashes back and forth between Saroo as an adult looking for his family and as a child when he was lost.

Skins (2007-2013) - 8.2

This British comedy-drama show focused on a group of teenagers as it delved into their lives no matter how controversial or serious the subject was, including storylines on family dysfunction, religion, sexuality, gender, and death.

Dev Patel portrayed Anwar Kharral in the first generation of the show. His character had a fun and eccentric personality while also having more serious moments when reckoning with the Muslim religion.

The Newsroom (2012-2014) - 8.6

This The show centers around and reports on real events happening just years before the show first aired in 2012. Dev Patel portrays Neal Sampat who runs the digital platform of the news network and is usually at the center of digital and social media news debates.
