Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones has been cast in the reboot of The Toxic Avenger. The original Toxic Avenger was a horror-comedy made in 1984 that became a cult classic after first being ignored by the movie-going public and then having a fortunate late-night run at a movie theater in 1985, prompting multiple sequels and unsuccessful animated series. The film tells the story of Melvin Ferd, a lonely janitor, who is exposed to toxic chemicals and then becomes a mutant superhero.
Per Deadline, Peter Dinklage has been cast in The Toxic Avenger reboot, marking another milestone in reboot will be directed and written by Macon Blair, actor in Blue Ruin and director of the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize winner I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore.
With Dinklage in the main role and Blair directing, we can likely expect a thrilling and hilarious horror film that delivers on the splatter-core and body horror audiences are expecting—but one that elevates the material to Deadpool territory. While the Toxic Avenger isn’t as well-known or part of any franchise, such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a lot of other superhero films have succeeded by going down the same independent path, like Kick-Ass and Dredd. A release date has not yet been announced for The Toxic Avenger.
