Pixar has unveiled new Toy Story 5 will reunite the cast of past movies following the emotional farewell of the 2019 sequel, as Tim Allen is confirmed to return as Buzz and his evil doppelgängers, while Tom Hanks is expected to return.

As Pixar took to the stage to show off their slate during D23 Brasil's first major showcase, the company showed off a new piece of concept art that depicts Toy Story 5's new threat emerging for the first time, later shared by Almanaque Disney on Twitter, which can be seen below:

In the piece, a group of Buzz Lightyear toys breaks free of their boxes outside of an abandoned shipping container. Though only a small number have broken free of their packaging in the artwork, many are still locked in their spaceship boxes in the container and ready to be unleashed.

What Toy Story 5's New Preview Reveals About The Buzz Lightyear Army

The Lost Lightyear Legion May Connect To The Movie's Core Conflict

While the battle between traditional toys and technology has been teased as the main narrative of Toy Story 5, it is unclear how the army of malfunctioning Buzz Lightyears will fit into the plot. Rather than taking on the familiar trope of an artificial intelligence-incorporated toy turning evil, the Lightyear army has instead been hinted to be trapped in play mode, much like the main Buzz was originally seen as in the first movie and reverted to in Toy Story 3.

However, the Buzz army's location fits alongside the toy versus technology narrative. Much like how Woody and the rest of his generation of toys were supplanted by the excitement surrounding the space race and its effect on pop culture, Buzz and space toys have seemingly followed a similar path, with what could be a shipment of unsold Buzz Lightyears being unleashed on the world being abandoned in the wilderness.

The Movie Faces An Uphill Battle With Viewers

After Toy Story 4's ending seemingly saw a final farewell between Woody and his friends, the fifth movie has an incredible hurdle to overcome with audiences. The 2010 Oscar-winning threequel had put a final note on the toy's relationship with Andy, while Toy Story 4 saw the group part ways. However, the sequel is set on reuniting the group and nullifying any closure these conclusions had.

Woody and Buzz Lightyear are confirmed to return in Toy Story 5, but other familiar characters may also return in the franchise's next installment.

While it remains to be seen whether Toy Story 5 can provide a story that justifies reuniting the toys, it is clear that the movie is nevertheless receiving the creative dedication it deserves. The image of an army of Buzz Lightyears marching as the sunset is a surprisingly epic sight to behold, and many may wonder just how this striking scene will be represented in the final movie upon its 2026 release.
