The Train To Busan zombie movie series is one of the most popular in the 21st century, but will Train To Busan 3 ever actually happen? Premiering in 2016 and directed by Yeon Sang-ho, Train to Busan concerns a father as he tries to protect his daughter from a zombie outbreak as they take an extended train ride across the country. With it's unique spin on the tired zombie sub-genre, Train to Busan quickly gained popularity around the globe, and was the first new vision in the zombie movie craze since series like The Walking Dead repopularized undead horror.

Train To Busan 2: Peninsula takes place four years after the events of the first movie, as the entirety of the southern peninsula of Korea has been overrun by zombies. With an isolated apocalypse, individual narratives, and the possibility to seek refuge in other countries, Train To Busan 2 deftly expanded the zombie franchise by opening the door to endless story possibilities. Because of the open-ended nature of the series, Train to Busan 3 is always an option, even if the movie isn't confirmed yet.

Zombies lunge forward as men shoot at them from cars in Train to Busan Peninsula Movie

Though almost no news has surfaced in the years since, the latest update came in 2021 when director Yeon Sang-ho discussed Train to Busan 3. The celebrated filmmaker danced around the issue when asked about a third movie, though he was certainly enthusiastic about continuing the series. "I personally think that for “Train to Busan,” I would like to continue that as a film series," he said, though he couldn't offer too many specifics. Unfortunately, several years have ed without any follow-ups on that vague statement.

Read Yeon Sang-ho's full comments here:

There are a lot of ideas I’ve been tossing around but I personally think that for “Train to Busan,” I would like to continue that as a film series. In Korea, the circumstances are not very favorable to create a series in the Korean language with visuals that are comparable to “Train to Busan” the film and also, you know, I have to work with … the distributor that we started on the original film as well. So I think taking into consideration all of those conditions, a film series would be the most feasible.

Train To Busan 3 Cast

Expect An Entirely New Cast

Men walk with machine guns in Train to Busan 2

Each installment in the Train To Busan movie series so far has featured an entirely new cast. Therefore, audiences can expect that there will be an entirely new one as well for Train To Busan 3. While it's possible that they could bring back characters from the first movie, this seems unlikely based on the series' basic premise of people with drastically different backgrounds experiencing the same zombie apocalypse in individual ways.

Train To Busan 3 Story Details

A World Of Possibilities

Even though there are only two movies in the series so far, it is evident that children are integral to Yeon Sang-ho's telling of the zombie apocalypse. As such, it's expected that the threequel will tell a story that focuses on Korea's youth in some way. Train To Busan 3 may take the route of uncovering the truth behind the origins of the zombie apocalypse, due to the sequel's major reveal that all other countries seem to be untouched.

As for specific details regarding location and story direction, it's impossible to know what Train to Busan 3 could be about because the movie isn't even written yet. With the opportunity to tell stories at any point in the timeline, the next movie could flash forward again, or it could shift backwards to touch on some other corner of Korea as it is overrun by undead hordes.
