Megatron finally entered the main action once more at the end of Transformers #16, where he declared his intention of taking back control of the Decepticons. It’s been a long road to get to this place, but all signs point to Megatron’s return being the most consequential event yet seen in the Energon Universe.
Megatron’s Back, and He’s Looking for Revenge on Starscream
Transformers #20 Variant Cover by Howard Porter
Megatron was missing from the first few issues of the Energon Universe's Transformers title, with Skybound leaning heavily into the mystery of where he was. It was later revealed that Megatron was actually being held prisoner by Cobra Commander in the hidden society of Cobra-La. Megatron eventually broke free in the Transformers story seen in 2024's FCBD Energon Universe Special, but the wounded Decepticon has apparently been licking his wounds ever since. Now that he’s back, the true Decepticon leader has many receipts to cash in, ensuring that Transformers remains a must-read book.
Megatron’s imminent return is yet one more reason why Transformers remains one of the most exciting comics out there.
As far as what Megatron will do upon his return, Johnson’s main cover shows who will likely be first in his sights. The Energon Universe Special also contained a flashback to the moment the Ark crashed on Earth, and readers learned that it was Meagtron’s untrustworthy second-in-command, Starscream, who blasted his leader off the Ark following a brutal battle with Optimus Prime. Starscream will have a lot to answer for, but Megatron will also have to deal with his newly-created brigade of former Decepticons, including Astrotrain, who has held a long-standing grudge against his former leader.
Transformers Is Heading to a Major Clash Between Optimus Prime and Megatron
Transformers #20 Introduces Key Characters to the Energon Universe
If and when Megatron takes back control of the Decepticons, he’ll provide perhaps the biggest challenge yet to Optimus Prime and the Autobots. Prime is currently making use of Megatron’s cannon arm, so there’s a lot of unfinished business between the long-time rivals. It will hopefully lead to an epic culmination of this first phase of the Transformers franchise in the Energon Universe, as Skybound is promising a lot as Johnson brings his award-winning run to a close. Megatron’s imminent return is yet one more reason why Transformers remains one of the most exciting comics out there.
Transformers #20 is available May 14th, 2025 from Skybound Entertainment.
