Through the new Astraeos DLC for Ark: Survival Ascended, you can trap and tame the creature Maeguana, a giant lizard that makes traveling across land easy. This new creature is a skittish omnivore that can be added to your already large roster of friendly reptiles at your command. However, unlike many other creatures, Maeguana has unique traits that distinguish it from its reptilian counterparts.
Maeguana has fast land travel speed along with the ability to glide through the air, making the creature a versatile mix of ground and air travel. This dinosaur acts like a reptilian flying squirrel, jumping high into the air before gliding over great distances. By taming and mounting this creature, you can use its unorthodox movements to cover a lot of ground quickly as you try to reach different locations.

Where To Find A Maeguana
Explore Specific Biomes Across Your Map
You can find Maeguanas around Grassland biomes throughout your map, but these creatures tend to spawn more near the Korinthos and Phokintos islands. These dinosaurs are easy to ignore at first, as they tend to appear commonly in the southern, temperate areas that you miss as you travel.

10 Best Dinosaurs That Ark: Survival Ascended Is Still Missing
Ark: Survival Ascended has some cool dinosaurs, but there are still many more real dinos that would be great official additions to the title.
The southeast corner of Phokintos has the highest population of Maeguanas, especially as you reach the Grasslands that border the beaches close to the ocean. Similarly, the southern tip of Korinthos Island has plenty of Maeguana gathered in its Grasslands. Maeguanas tend to spawn close to water, but not within Swamp biomes or other areas that would be too hot or too cold for the creature to survive.
Before you start searching for a Maeguana, try to tame at least one flying creature first. Maeguanas are much easier to tame when you can follow them wherever they go with dinosaurs you've tamed in Ark: Survival Ascended.
Whenever you find a Maeguana, do not try to harm it right away. These creatures are notoriously elusive, as they use their high jump and glide to quickly flee their spawn location if they feel threatened. To discover one without making any mistakes, you have to present yourself as harmless entering a Maeguana's space.
Best Way To Tame A Maeguana
Trap Or Harm The Creature Before Feeding It
There are multiple ways to tame a Maeguana like any other creature in the game, but some methods are easier than others. While Maeguana is not the most difficult dinosaur to tame, the creature is one of the toughest to pin down. This is because Maeguana will flee from you the moment it gets hurt, jumping and gliding to a new location before you have a chance to calm it down.
Here are the two main strategies for taming a Maeguana:
- Knocking it out with attacks
- Trapping it around structures (Billboards, Pillars, Ceilings, etc.)
Knocking out a Maeguana is much harder than trapping it, as the creature will run away every time it takes damage. With a flying mount though, you can easily track where the creature is going since any type of flight is much faster than a Maeguana's glide. Simply keep attacking the creature until it gets knocked out at low health, then you can begin trying to tame it.
Arrows from ranged weapons are better for Maeguana taming, as you don't want to accidentally kill the creature by dealing too much damage.
The trap box method is a common taming technique in Ark: Survival Ascended where you build around the Maeguana first. This prevents it from jumping and gliding away, but it can still move out of the trap you make. Use Rare Flower or Giant Bee Honey to lure a Maeguana into the box you make to trap it and start taming it.

Ark: Survival Ascended DLC Transforms The Game Into An Immersive Greek Myth
Ark: Survival Ascended players wanting to experience the magic of Greek mythology need to check out this officially ed mod on Steam.
Once you have a Maeguana trapped or knocked out, feed it Prime Meat, Mutton, or Basic Kibble to begin taming it. As an Omnivore, Maeguanas will eat almost anything you feed them, but these items will help tame these creatures much faster.
Maeguanas are non-aggressive, meaning they will not attack you if you use aggressive strategies to try and tame them. This mount is one of the best dinosaurs to befriend early on the Astraeos map due to their impressive speed and flight to navigate around the fresh region. Those looking to explore every part of the DLC region in Ark: Survival Ascended should trap at least one Maeguana to travel around the new land easily.
