Trick 'r Treat follows four interconnecting stories on a single Halloween night, as ancient traditions become central to the respective fates of the film's trick 'r treating (or otherwise disengaged) characters. The individual stories eventually blend together in a non-linear format to highlight the malevolent consequences of disrespecting tradition. Though facing some significant drawbacks upon its release, the film eventually became a sleeper hit once it was released on DVD and Blu-ray. As a result - and after nearly a decade since its release - rumors of a sequel eventually evolved into something more concrete.

Filmmaker Mick Garris (Hocus Pocus) spoke with Dougherty on his podcast Post Mortem with Mick Garris, and the two discussed the possibilities of a sequel, the likelihood of which is greater than ever according to Dougherty:

"My hope is that once [Godzilla: King of the Monsters] has been put to rest that I can dive back into [Trick 'r Treat 2]. It's currently the first week of October, so obviously my mind is drifting back to it. I would love to finish writing it in post-production [of Godzilla], and then I'd love to make it my next project. But we'll see."

Following the first Trick 'r Treat, Dougherty wrote and directed the horror/comedy X-Men: Apocalypse (he also wrote the screenplay for for X2: X-Men United), and is currently in post-production on Godzilla: King of the Monsters (which he cowrote and directed).

During the interview, Dougherty also cites horror legends like Stephen King, Clive Barker, and the Brothers Grimm as some of his many influences within the horror genre. In fact, the morbid influence represented within the vast Grimm collection is noticeably sprinkled throughout Trick 'r Treat, especially with the film's Halloween mascot of sorts, Sam. The child-sized, costumed creature is itself filled with literal pumpkin guts, overseeing All Hallow's Eve to make sure everyone follows the rules (i.e. handing out candy, keeping jack-o-lanterns lit, etc.).

Not unlike one of his creative influencers, Stephen King, Dougherty is creating a connected universe within his holiday-themed films, and says that characters like Sam and Krampus exist within the same cinematic domain:

"The films have certain common elements which I don't know if anyone has found them all. In my mind, two ancient deities who protect these quasi-mystical qualities will probably exist within the same universe and maybe get a drink and swap stories between holidays, and in [Krampus], there are certain threads that connect them if you pay attention."
