Following 54 episodes of Trollhunters aired over three seasons from 2016 to 2018, a big-screen adaptation of Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans was released on July 21, 2021. The film continues the sprawling adventures of Jim Lake Jr. (Emile Hirsch) and his beloved group of monster-hunting friends who vow to protect the kingdom of Arcadia from the ruthless tyrant Gunmar (Clancy Brown) and his evil minions.
As for the TV show, a large part of its appeal comes from the wide array of memorable main characters, all of which offer a personality trait or two that viewers can relate to depending on what time of the year they were born.
Aries - Claire Nunez
As Jim's feisty, sarcastic, curious, and comionate girlfriend, Claire's personality seems most compatible with that of a fiery Aries. She's a confident leader when called upon, but also grows impatient and irritable when things aren't handled quickly and cleanly. She balances the best and worst of the fire sign.
Moreover, Claire often bravely leads with her head just like a ram does, and usually deals with the consequences afterward, as seen when she first procures her magical staff. Claire is also a loyal friend and ionate romantic partner to Jim, two traits that underscore her astrological makeup.
Taurus - Barbara Lake
Barbara Lake (Amy Landecker) is Jim's stubborn, protective, and hard-working single mother who will do anything to keep her son safe. As such, Barbara would certainly be a Taurean earth sign.
Barbara's bullish personality is balanced by her conscientious work ethic as an around-the-clock doctor at the Arcadia hospital. Like most Taureans, Barbara also has a creative side that is demonstrated by her incessant painting hobby that helps rekindle her faded memories regarding Jim's troll-hunting escapades.
Gemini - Jim Lake
The premise of Trollhunters is anchored by Jim Lake Jr.'s (Emile Hirsch) secret identity as a gallant monster slayer. At his core, Jim's devious double life clearly equates him with Gemini's twin nature.
While Gemini's are often associated with deceit and contradictive personalities, Jim also demonstrates Gemini's adaptability as a boy desperately trying to balance his normal life and adventurous heroism as best he can. Intelligent, driven, outgoing, and enthusiastic, Jim channels more good Gemini traits than bad ones.
Cancer - Vendel
Considering his deeply skeptical and pessimistic outlook in the early part of the series, Vendel (Victor Raider-Wexler) would almost certainly be a Cancer. While he overcomes the negative traits of the water sign with his vast knowledge of troll lore, Vendel is also incredibly caring, intuitive, and loyal.
Vendel's grouchy mood swings and temperamental outbursts also reinforce his crabby nature, especially when Blinky, Toby, and Claire stole his staff and learning of Angor's plot to attack the troll market.
Leo - Gunmar
As the leonine king of the jungle, Gunmar is the mightiest beast in the land. The iron-fisted ruler of Arcadia has all the makings of a charismatic, natural-born leader. As such, he could only be considered as a Leo.
With few redeeming qualities to speak of, Gunmar showcases the worst of Leo's characteristics, including anger, megalomania, egotism, possession, jealousy, arrogance, pomposity, and vindictiveness. Despite his evil ways, Gunmar is warm and comionate to his son Bular (Ron Perlman), good qualities often associated with Leos.
Virgo - Bular
While Bular is a near-spitting image of his ruthless and tyrannical father Gunmar, he has a few qualities that align with that of a Virgo as well. In particular, Bular is extremely arrogant, a chief hallmark of the Virgo personality.
As a clear-cut baddie, Bular's negative Virgo traits also include his cruel and judgmental outlook on the trolls, who he often torments with harsh criticism. Bular's supreme cockiness leads to his demise when he underestimates Jim's superior fighting ability and lets his guard down.
Libra - Draal
One of the biggest hallmarks of a Libra is its sense of honor and reliability. While Draal the Deadly (Matthew Waterson) begins as Jim's fierce foe, he evolves to become one of the troll hunter's most dependable allies and proud protectors.
Draal is also one of the most selfless characters on the show, further emphasizing his Libra-like tendencies. He is willing to help and put the causes of others ahead of his own, including the time he gave Jim his special totem necklace to help him woo Claire.
Scorpio - Steve Palchuk
As the meanest and most narcissistic bully on the show, Steve (Steven Yeun) would positively be a Scorpio. Denoted by the deadly scorpion, Steve's venomous treatment of his classmates is a toxic as can be. He's mean, vindictive, jealous, resentful, and full of hatred in Season 1.
However, when Steve makes a positive transition in Season 2 and begins helping Jim instead of picking on him, he shows the better side of Scorpio by being more understanding, loyal, and protective of the troll-hunting mission.
Sagittarius - Toby Domazalski
Charlie Saxton voices the role of Toby Domazalski, Jim's nerdy and enthusiastic best friend. As such, he channels all the best Sagittarian traits as a happy-go-lucky optimist with a cheery demeanor.
Moreover, Toby's adventurous personality gives him courageous risk-taking traits that further underscores his Sagittarian roots. With a flair for the dramatic, Toby's excitability and need to be the constant center of attention also corresponds to his nature as the flashy fire sign. On the negative side, Toby's clumsiness and lack of tact also hint at his zodiac.
Capricorn - Aaarrrgghh!
Despite his burly demeanor and violent tendencies as a youngster, Aaarrrgghh! (Fred Tatasciore) mellows out considerably to become a peaceful and pacifistic companion to Jim and the gang. As such, he would certainly as an equable Capricorn.
Aaarrrgghh!'s evolution from a violent Gumm-Gumm to a non-threatening gentle giant underscores his Capricorn nature, although he isn't afraid to show the discipline to protect his friends when called upon. Loyalty is also a key Capricorn trait, which Aaarrrgghh! has in spades.
