As the Tron: Ares release date inches closer, Rønning takes to Instagram to confirm the end of principal photography. The director shares a host of behind-the-scenes pictures from the film's Vancouver-based production, including a blurred-out look at what appears to be a light cycle in the real world. "That’s a wrap on TRON:ARES 🥏 Thanks to an incredible and tireless crew, I really believe we pushed the filmmaking limits on this movie. Even through six weeks of night shoots you never slowed down. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done," Rønning writes in his caption.

There's A Lot Of Pressure On The Follow-Up To Tron: Legacy
A gap of 28 years separates the first Tron from Joseph Kosinski's legacy sequel in 2010. When Tron: Ares hits theaters next year, it will be 15 years since audiences' last big-screen trip to the Grid. Such large gaps between films is obviously not the norm for most franchises, and this could change with the installment.
Tron: Legacy earned just over $400 million at the box office, which makes it only a very modest success at the box office. With an estimated budget of $170 million, Disney had evidently hoped it would do better business. The reviews were somewhat mixed as well, and, combined with the box office, this essentially killed momentum for any follow-ups. With a new filmmaker at the helm, a new star, and a new story, Tron: Ares has the potential to successfully revive the franchise for a new generation.
In addition to Leto, the Tron: Ares cast also includes Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, Great Lee, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins. It was also recently confirmed that Jeff Bridges will feature in the film in some capacity.
If the film is a success, it's entirely possible that audiences won't have to wait so long for another installment. If, on the other hand, it struggles, the franchise could go back on ice for the foreseeable future. There's a lot riding on Tron: Ares, then, and it has the challenging task of appealing to both die-hard fans of the franchise and younger audiences who will be experiencing it for the first time. It remains to be seen how Tron: Ares fares, but the film is evidently now one step closer to hitting the big screen.
