A reported filming start date and shooting location for Tron 3 are revealed. Released in 1982, TRON represented a huge step forward in the realm of computer effects, but unfortunately did not prove to be a huge hit for Disney. Despite inspiring a cult of devoted fans, TRON was not revisited on the big screen until 2010’s TRON: Legacy, which like its predecessor boasted state-of-the-art visuals, and also like its predecessor was a disappointment at the box office, grossing just $400 million worldwide. Now over a decade after Legacy, the TRON series is set to continue with the mysterious TRON: Ares, starring Morbius’ Jared Leto.
Beyond the reveal of Leto as the star, very little has been let out of the bag about TRON: Ares, but now there’s a report indicating shooting on the film is set to start very soon, as Production List posts a kick-off date of July 3, 2023, with Vancouver as the location. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning is still named as helmer in the listing, and Leto is the only listed cast member.
What TRON: Ares Might Be About
The TRON: Ares summary posted to Production List reads as follows:
Serving as a continuation of the beloved TRON: Legacy, this sequel delves deeper into Ares’ narrative, offering fans a unique and immersive experience within the Tron universe. With cutting-edge visuals, mesmerizing action sequences, and a compelling exploration of Ares’ journey, this film promises to be a thrilling addition to the iconic Tron franchise.
This summary is unsurprisingly not very helpful when it comes to piecing together what TRON: Ares might be about, but a clue can perhaps be gleaned from the mention of “Ares’ journey.” Given the film’s title, it can be assumed Ares is the main character, and it has long been presumed that Leto is the one playing that character. But where might Ares’ journey be taking him?
If the plot of TRON: Legacy is any hint about the story of Ares, it might be that the titular character is headed to the real world. As fans recall, Legacy saw Olivia Wilde’s Quorra leaving The Grid and entering the realm of humans, a development with huge implications. It’s possible that Ares, who did not appear in either previous TRON film, is like Quorra a program that is able to take on human form.
A TRON film that takes place both inside The Grid and in the real world was indeed teased by TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, who revealed in 2017 (via Tron 3 casting is revealed, it won’t be known whether Quorra or Sam Flynn will be coming back for the latest series installment.
