The Heir, also known as the final boss of Tunic, is unsurprisingly the most challenging enemy you will face. After delivering the three colored gems to the Sealed Temple, you will face off against The Heir in an initial battle that must be lost. You will respawn as a ghost and must regain all of your stat upgrades by visiting the Hero's Graves before facing the final boss in an actual match.

While The Heir can be fought without restoring upgrades and regaining the fox's physical form, the already hard fight will be even tougher, and thus, it is not recommended. Instead, players should visit each of the six Hero's Graves as a ghost to restore all previous upgrades before taking on their most challenging opponent yet.

Unfortunately, retrieving the upgrades from the hero's graves can only be done after entering the Cathedral and completing the combat trials to unlock the teleport dash ability. You will be returned to your normal form once you have retrieved the upgrade items floating on pedestals at the end of each Hero's Grave path. At this point, the Fox may again confront The Heir for the true final boss fight.

The arena can be reached using any of ability card slots in Tunic.

How To Defeat The Heir In Tunic

Tips & Tricks For Conquering Both Phases

The final boss fight of Tunic, with the boss showing off a large glowing sword

The Heir has a mix of melee and magic attacks that they can use from the start of Tunic's final boss battle and a few additional moves during the second phase. Initially, The Heir can slam their sword down, causing rings of electricity to spread across the arena's ground. This move is one of the hardest to dodge because players need to use the teleport dash ability to quickly warp in between the three rings to avoid being hit.

During this final boss fight, The Heir can use a triple sword hit, lunge with the sword, hit with a slow but powerful strike, or trigger a series of lightning bolts with small damage circles. So keep an eye out, and don't get too comfortable trying to predict patterns.

In the second phase of the fight, The Heir will use health-draining attacks that have similar effects to the crystals found in Tunic's Quarry. Each attack will have a familiar purple glow to indicate the effect.

The best way to quickly defeat The Heir in Tunic is to stock up on explosives like firecrackers or bombs. Additionally, try to keep moving. Since many attacks have range and cover a large radius, one of the best things you can do is stay quick on your feet utilizing the dash ability.

Explosive items deal significant damage compared to other weapons in Tunic, and throwing them from a distance will allow the fox to avoid most of The Heir's sword attacks. The Heir also takes time to recover after sword strikes, so players can teleport to the boss and quickly hit them with melee attacks for easy chip damage.

Every Weapon in Tunic & Where to Find Them

Tunic has a shield and six main weapons that can be used for melee, ranged, and magic attacks, but some of them also have special functions.

The magic staff weapon in Tunic should primarily be used as a backup in Tunic's final boss fight when players need a moment to drink a health potion or recover stamina. The Heir will attempt to dodge the magic staff's fireballs, which stops the boss from attacking momentarily.

If the magic staff attack hits, it will only deal a small amount of damage, so it shouldn't be used as a primary weapon unless you're looking for a very long and tedious fight.

Alternatively, players can equip Tunic's magic dagger weapon to freeze The Heir and either recover or get a few melee hits before the boss unfreezes. However, players should know that the dagger uses more magic points, so it can't be used as often as the staff. At the end of the second phase of Tunic's final boss fight, The Heir will fall, and the ending will play out depending on whether players have collected all the instruction pages and unlocked the true ending.
